Potential Outbreak of Chicken Pox on UWL
    Posted: Feb 24, 2010 12:18 PM EST

E-mail statement from Paula M. Knudson, Ph.D. from UWL to students:

"I have recently been notified of potential cases of chicken pox on campus. The symptoms include fever, sore throat, and a rash. It usually starts with vesicular skin rash mainly on the body and head rather than at the periphery and become itchy raw pockmarks which mostly heal without scarring.

Chicken pox is spread easily through coughs or sneezes of ill individuals, or through direct contact with secretions from the rash. Following primary infection there is usually lifelong protective immunity from further episodes of chickenpox. Chickenpox is rarely fatal, although it is generally more severe in adult males than in adult females or children. if you have received the two recommended vaccinations for chicken pox, you should be relatively safe from contracting it. However, if you have a suppressed immune system and are living on campus, please contact the Health Center at 785-8558."
