    Several instances of highly contagious infection documented, health department officials say

    The health department has issued a warning about the outbreak of a bacterial infection of nearly two dozen cases that include children at two local child care centers and also at least two adults who went to Memorial Hospital.

    SOUTH BEND -- Twenty-five cases of shigella, a bacterial infection that causes abdominal pain, fever and diarrhea, have now been confirmed in St. Joseph County, according to health officer Dr. Thomas Felger.

      It looks like the flu.

      "It causes an intestinal illness. Usually fever, abdominal pain and significant diarrhea," says Dr. Thomas Felger, St. Joseph County Health Officer.

      But it spreads fast. Right now, it's spread to at least six South Bend schools. It's called shigellosis...

        There is an extremely contagious bacterial illness going around that you should be aware of -- especially if you have young children.

        The Indiana State Department of health in investigating an increase in shigella cases in the state. It is a diarrhea illness. So far at least 1,000 people have been identified and 880 have tested positive for the sickness and some of the cases are resistant to certain antibiotics...
