    Pertussis returning earlier than three-year cycle

    MILLERSBURG -- Although he'd rather it not be the case, the numbers keep adding up, and there's no escaping reality. Pertussis is back in Holmes County, and seemingly ahead of the predictable three-year cycle it typically follows...

    ...Midway through January, the department had reports of four confirmed cases and even more reports of unconfirmed cases sweeping through the eastern part of the county, where many residents choose against vaccination, he said.

    The most recent cases include:

    -- A 2-year-old Fredericksburg area girl, who along with her family was vaccinated. The family opted against treatment and prophylaxis.

    -- A 7-year-old girl in the Charm/Baltic area. She was unvaccinated and, at the request of her family, was offered no treatment, and those within immediate contact of her were given no preventative treatment.

    -- An 8-year-old unvaccinated boy from the Charm/Baltic area. He was treated and his family received prophylaxis.

    -- A 29-month-old girl from the Benton/Fryburg area, believed to be unvaccinated...
