Mysterious viral fevers on the rise

    Staff Reporter

WARANGAL: The deaths on account of suspected malaria, dengue and other mysterious viral fevers are on the rise in the district.

The deaths occurring in agency areas are spread across the district and hence not drawing the attention of the district administration. The onset of monsoon signalled the outbreak of epidemic to which mostly those in the agency areas fall prey to. It was suspected that Chandipura virus was identified as the bugbear in instances of viral fevers in mandals abutting the forest areas. The efforts being taken by the district health administration were not yielding the expected results.

According to the district Collector N. Sridhar, they had been conducting medical camps since September 19 and treated 1,500 persons. They collected 24 samples from the persons suffering from the suspected dengue fever, which were tested negative.

    Chandipura virus?

However, according to research scholar Dr.M. Radhakrishna of Kakatiya University, there was no mechanism to establish the virus that is causing deaths in the agency mandals. Though it was said to be Chandipura virus, no research took place in the country to prove it.

Explaining the disease dynamics, Dr. Radhakrishna says due to unchecked encroachment of the habitat of sand fly carrying wild animals, they move closer to human habitations, which is also a cause for decrease in their number.

The existence of this vector close to human habitations in forest areas is the cause of spread of the viral fevers through the Chandipura virus.

?There is a dire need for establishment of at least a virology field laboratory in tribal areas,? he said.
