Anthrax cases in cattle: State services take necessary measures

    Updated 07/27/2024

11 cattle from the same herd died recently, on a summer pasture plot (commune of Collandre), isolated, difficult to access, and without contact with other animals. The analyses carried out revealed the presence of anthrax in the animals found dead.

From the first suspected case and before confirmation of the disease by the national reference laboratory, the farm concerned was placed under surveillance, with the following preventive measures:
    • vaccination of all animals in the affected herd. The protective effects of the vaccine take effect after 7 days and are complete 15 days after the injection (i.e. from July 31, 2024). The herd remains under active surveillance.
    • the ban on the removal of these animals from the farms and pastures where they are located.
    • In conjunction with national experts, local and regional teams from state services were brought together to coordinate the implementation of appropriate measures and monitor the progress of this event.
    • No other cases have been identified in the department
Only people who have handled the carcasses of animals that died of the disease may be at risk of having been contaminated. In conjunction with the Regional Health Agency, they have all been identified and referred to their doctor so that they can benefit from preventive antibiotic treatment if necessary. Cases of animal-to-human contamination remain rare and result from direct contact or the ingestion of contaminated meat.

Breeders suspecting a case of the disease are invited to contact their health veterinarian as soon as possible and the DDETSPP services on 04 63 27 31 80.
The prohibition of access to the area is indicated on site and must be strictly respected as well as common sense measures nearby (keep dogs on a leash, do not touch dead animals, do not pick up plants such as flowers, berries, mushrooms, etc.)

Anthrax episodes in France have never highlighted cases of spread to humans through the drinking water network and, moreover, the events in Collandre took place outside the protected water catchment areas. However, as a precautionary measure, one catchment was cut off and a second is subject to specific and adapted preventive treatment measures.

State services are monitoring the development of the situation in real time in order to adapt preventive measures.

    What is anthrax?

Anthrax is a zoonosis (an infectious disease that is transmitted from animals to humans) that mainly affects herbivores. It is caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis , which has the particularity of persisting for several years in the form of spores in soil.

Its importance lies in the rapid and sudden mortality in affected livestock, in its capacity for persistence and resurgence from old foci. The disease manifests itself in animals in the form of a high fever, with general, circulatory, hemorrhagic, digestive and urinary symptoms, and rapidly progresses to death.

    How are animals contaminated?

The most common form of transmission in animals remains ingestion by grazing on land contaminated by spores (phase of the life cycle of the bacteria), which can rise to the surface in particular during climatic episodes of drought followed by heavy rainfall, and also after earthworks, thus contaminating the grass and fodder plants ingested by the animals.

What is the risk of contamination to humans?

The main mode of contamination in humans is due to contact with or ingestion of infected animals. The last human cases in France date back to 2008. Transmission of anthrax from one person to another has never been observed.

How to treat and prevent the disease?

Whether in animals or humans, antibiotics are effective against anthrax. The best way to prevent the disease or limit its spread remains the vaccination of animals.

Anthrax cases in cattle: State services take necessary measures

      Updated on 08/30/2024

The implementation of biosecurity measures and the vaccination of cattle from the herd infected with anthrax on a summer pasture plot (commune of Collandres) in July 2024 made it possible to protect the herd.

On August 13, 2024, a new outbreak of anthrax was confirmed for animals found dead on plots neighboring the first outbreak (municipality of Trizac), leading to the deployment of the same health measures and the vaccination of the herd.

Since August 27, 2024, following the discovery of three corpses on new summer pasture plots (commune of Trizac), a third outbreak is suspected, analyses are underway. Without waiting for confirmation of the disease by the national reference laboratory, the farm concerned is placed under surveillance with a ban on animals leaving the farm and the pastures where they are located.

Anthrax episodes in France have never revealed cases of transmission to humans via the drinking water network. However, concerning the first outbreak in July, as a precautionary measure, a water intake intended for human consumption was cut off and a second is subject to specific and adapted preventive treatment measures. The additional monitoring of water quality implemented since then has not revealed any anomalies.

The environmental context (absence of water catchment within or in the immediate vicinity of the plots in question) of the two other outbreaks in August did not justify the implementation of similar measures.

State services are monitoring the development of the situation in real time in order to adapt preventive measures.
