  • Recall expanded for Second Time: Tylenol medicine

Story Created: Dec 29, 2009 at 3:21 AM EST

McNeil Consumer Healthcare and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration is expanding a voluntary recall of Tylenol Arthritis Pain Caplets.

Now, all lots of the over-the-counter medication in 100-count bottles are being recalled after consumer complaints of the medicine smelling musty.

In November 2009, five lots of the medication was recalled because of moldy, musty or mildew-like odors that consumers associated wit nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

According to a joint statement by the McNeil and the FDA, the odor is caused by a chemical used to treat wooden pallets on which the product is stored and later transported. McNeil reported symptoms consumers experienced were temporary and non-serious.

If you bought Tylenol Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 county bottles with easy-open red caps, stop using the medication and contact McNeil for refund or replacement.

Call the company at (888) 222-6036 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. (Eastern Time) Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sundays. Consumers can also find information at
    www.tylenol.com.

Specific lot numbers of the caplets being recalled are available at www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls.

Re: Recall expanded for Tylenol arthritis medicine

"NEW YORK ? Johnson & Johnson expanded a recall of over-the-counter medications Friday, the second time it has done so in less than a month because of a moldy smell that has made users sick.

The broadening recall now includes some batches of regular and extra-strength Tylenol children's Tylenol, eight-hour Tylenol, Tylenol arthritis, Tylenol PM, children's Motrin, Motrin IB, Benadryl Rolaids, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph's aspirin. Caplet and geltab products sold in the Americas, the United Arab Emirates, and Fiji were recalled.

Johnson & Johnson's McNeil Consumer Healthcare Products recalled some Tylenol Arthritis Caplets in November due to the smell, which caused nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Almost three weeks ago, the company expanded its recall to include Tylenol Arthritis Caplets."
