  • Egypt - Sohag, Fifteen students ill article indicates not chicken pox, school closed and being cleaned.

Interesting one would think these students presented some type of symptoms. it does indicate they have something and does not mention any type of flu or its symptoms.

I take it by your comment the correct translation should be chicken pox, not smallpox as google creates? Suspected smallpox cases would be global news.

I just had my son read it ,it indicates its not smallpox. and does not mention what it is, in Amriya several months ago a couple of kids presented some type of rash red spots along with some flu like symptoms and then died, both had red spots on their bodies and no other information was released on those two cases. i suspect this may be the same thing.

the reference to smallpox in the article is correct and the use of the word liar is also correct based on the arabic.

this governorate is the poorest within egypt and under-developed it could be a case of crying wolf but then why go to the bother of cleaning the school and follow-up with the students.

the title is also correct based on the arabic so its neither one.

Smallpox would be a major story, as no cases of that illness have been reported globally in 20+ years. Smallpox is not a valid diagnosis anywhere in the world.

Perhaps the article is saying the kids have chicken pox, not smallpox (that the people saying smallpox are liars).

You might still close and disinfect the school for 21 cases of chickenpox. There is no indication that any of the ill children have been hospitalized.

The illness that killed a couple kids in Alexandria over the summer that you mention here had symptoms of red spots on (under?) the skin. It might have been meningitis (actually blood poisoning caused by meningitis bacteria), or conceivably leptospirosis or even septicemic plague (unlikely). It did not sound like smallpox or chickenpox at all. Pox viruses cause pustules on the skin, not red spots under it.

We'll just have to see if anything further is reported. With no symptomatic description, this could even be H1N1.
