Ebola Alert! Burkinabe Dies Of Ebola-Like Symptoms In Ghana
    By StarrFMOnline

Ghana may now have recorded her first Ebola case. A Burkinabe man, who had fever and bled from his nose and ears "was brought in dead," at the Bawku Presby Hospital in Ghana?s Upper East region Friday afternoon.

The Medical Director at the Hospital, Dr Joseph Yaw Manu, confirmed to StarrFMonline.com that the man had died at the time he was brought in, saying: ??What scared me most as a Medical Doctor is that he was bleeding from his ears and nose?symptoms of Ebola.?

On Dr Manu?s orders, blood samples from the deceased have been taken to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) at the University of Ghana for testing. If positive, this would be Ghana?s first confirmed case of the virus, which has killed at least 961 people in the West African sub-region out of 1,779 total cases. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are among the hardest hit countries...

A Burkinabe died in Ghana with symptoms similar to those of Ebola

        By: Abdou ZOURE
        August 9, 2014

The information is relayed by several Ghanaian media. A Burkinabe living in northwestern Ghana near the border of Burkina village, reportedly died while being transported by his family at the hospital in Bawku. He was bleeding profusely from the nose and ears.

Joseph Yaw Manu, the Chief Medical Officer of the Presby Hospital in Bawku, in an interview with a Ghanaian radio, expressed concern that the bleeding is similar to the symptoms of Ebola.

Blood samples have been taken and sent to the laboratory of the University of Ghana to see if Ghana has recorded its first case of Ebola virus disease.

According StarrFMonline.com, a Ghanaian media, our compatriot, suffering from fever, was taken to a hospital for treatment in Burkina. But his condition not improving, his parents then decided to cross the the Ghana border, for proper care. Deceased, his body was brought back to a town called Sankanduri in Burkina for burial.

Sources close to the Burkina Faso Ministry of Health, contacted by Burkina 24, say not yet being aware of this information and that "no confirmed cases" has yet been declared in Burkina.

Note that in Togo, a similar case of a man who collapsed in the street, bleeding from the nose and ears, was detected. But the Togolese health officials quickly verified that it was not a case of Ebola.

No Ebola case recorded in Nsawam ? Gov?t Hospital

The Nsawam Government Hospital has dismissed reports that the hospital has recorded suspected cases of the Ebola disease.

Media reports over the weekend indicated that three individuals who reported at the Nsawam Government Hospital on Saturday with symptoms of the disease had tested positive with the Ebola virus.

However, the Medical Superintendent of the Nsawam Government Hospital, Dr Kofi Ablor in an interview with Citi News dismissed those reports describing them as false.

He admitted that three patients were brought to the hospital on Saturday and were placed in a separate ward due to the intensity of their ailment.

Dr Ablor told Citi News that all three persons were suffering from cholera, and only two were bleeding heavily from their nose.

According to him, blood samples from the two patients bleeding from the nose have been sent to the Noguchi Memorial centre for further tests,
and they are yet to be presented with the outcome of the test results...

Ghana: 2 Ebola-like cases at Liberian Refugee camp
              Posted Aug 13, 2014 at 4:43pm

An area populated by Liberian Refugees in Ghana’s Central Region has recorded two Ebola-like cases.

Blood samples of the patients who live within the enclave of the Buduburam camp – home to thousands of Liberian refugees for more than two decades – have been sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) at the University of Ghana for testing.

They are bleeding from their nostrils and mouths – symptoms of the haemorrhagic fever that has killed more than 1,000 people in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Nigeria has also recorded a few cases and deaths.

Adams Nuhu, the Municipal Chief Executive for Kasoa – the town that hosts the community of Liberian refugees – told StarrFMonline.com that health officials in the area stumbled upon the suspected Ebola patients, as they took care of 70 cholera patients – including the two – at a polyclinic in the town...

Tests on Kasoa suspected Ebola case negative

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kasoa, Adam Nuhu has told Citi News, tests conducted on blood samples of two persons suspected to have Ebola have proved negative.

There were reports that the Kasoa Polyclinic had recorded two suspected Ebola cases on Tuesday, but Adam Nuhu says the two were suffering from cholera. Kasoa has recorded about 70 cholera cases so far; a situation Mr Nuhu says is being misconstrued to be Ebola.

In an interview with Citi News, Adam Nuhu stated that due to the proximity of the Liberian Refugee Camp to Kasoa, residents presumed that the patients were infected with the Ebola virus.

According to him, the residents were alarmed after news broke that blood samples have been taken to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research for testing.

He clarified that the Municipality is experiencing a cholera outbreak, ?which is very serious. We have recorded 70 cases and one is even dead.?

Mr. Nuhu added that some cholera patients whose conditions worsened, sometimes exhibit Ebola-like symptoms, hence, the assertion that they may have contracted the Ebola virus...

Suspected Ebola patient dies; care givers at risk

Health workers at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital are praying and hoping that a suspected Ebola patient who they attended to and who died in their arms may well prove negative for the virus.
                  ...
On Tuesday evening Joy News learnt a patient who had previously been treated for a psychotic episode returned after the wife noticed that he was clenching his teeth.

Doctors initially thought it was a drug reaction. Deputy Director of the facility Dr. Pinaman Appau was called by nurses and rushed in to see the man going unconscious and bleeding from the nose and mouth.

She and the medical director came in wearing their gloves and managed to put the patient on the floor to keep him from chocking on his blood.

They tried to take samples of the blood but were not successful. They eventually took the sample from the blood oozing from the nose.

Within five minutes the patient was dead. There was no protective clothing and other key protective health materials to keep the care givers safe from a possible Ebola infection.
                  ...
Even though a sample was finally taken and delivered to the Noguchi Institute for testing, Dr Pinaman again conceded, that sample may well be rejected because the right steps were not followed.

With the suspected Ebola patient now dead, the only option left for a thorough scientific investigation of whether he was actually infected with Ebola is all the persons who had contact with him the few hours before he died.
                  ....
Dr Pinaman said given the discussion they had with the family of the deceased it was clear the deceased had no travel history, especially to the Ebola infected countries in West Africa.

An Ebola scare at the Dominase SDA Hospital in the Ashanti Regional has created panic in the area.

A man believed to be in his late twenties died in the hospital with the symptoms of Ebola Tuesday.

He was left unattended to by frightened hospital staff who did not have basic protective equipment with which to handle the patient.

According to the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Prince Kwakye Afriyie, the deceased reported to the hospital three days ago with fever.

                          He was treated and discharged.

But the Pusiga native returned to the hospital, this time with blood oozing out of his orifices, Dr Afriyie said.

Frightened hospital, suspecting the victim to be suffering from the deadly Ebola which has killed over 2000 across West Africa, called the District health authorities for Personal Protective Equipment.

                          There was none there.

Here is another in Kintampo, 200 kilometers away from the one in Dominase.

Suspected Ebola man dies at Kintampo

Fear and panic has gripped residents of Kintampo in the Brong-Ahafo Region following the bizarre death of a young man suspected to have been infected with the deadly Ebola virus.

The man, who was on board a Kumasi-Bolga bound mini bus with registration number GT 9982 E, allegedly complained of some ailment and started having running stomach and vomiting blood when the vehicle got to Kintampo Sunday morning. He died some few minutes later.

Eyewitnesses told DAILY GUIDE that the development created panic among both the passengers and the residents around the lorry park where he passed on, as medical personnel, dressed in their full Ebola apparel, stormed the scene to convey the body to prevent people from contacting it.

The Disease Officer of the Kintampo Municipality, Kofi Adams, confirmed the death of the man to this paper when contacted on telephone. He said the body had since been buried, whilst the blood sample had been taken to the Noguchi Medical Research Centre in Accra for testing.

Mr Adams therefore appealed to residents of the area and the general public not to be scared by the incident since it was not anything serious as earlier speculated, whiles waiting for the full result to ascertain the actual cause of death.

He disclosed to DAILY GUIDE that the deceased was among a group of students from the Upper East Region, who went to the Wassa area in the Western Region to embark on galamsey (illegal mining) activities during the holidays to earn some money to pay their fees. And, on their way back to the region, the deceased suddenly fell sick and died.

According to Mr Adams, the cause of death could be mercury poison. Mr Adams indicated that a similar incident happened recently at the Goaso area where a Galamseyer died vomiting blood as a result of mercury poison.
