    Governor Jindal Declares State of Emergency for Winter Storm
    Conditions, GOHSEP Activates Crisis Action Team

    BATON ROUGE ?
    Today, Governor Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency for a major winter storm

    system and related dangerous winter weather conditions. Additionally, the Governor?s Office of Homeland

    Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) activated its Crisis Action Team (CAT) to monitor wintry


    and possible hazardous conditions that could impact parts of Louisiana over the next few days. GOHSEP


    remains in contact with parishes in the event state resources are requested and GOHSEP personnel are located


    in each region to assist those local parishes. Louisiana State Police (LSP), the Department of Transportation


    and Development (DOTD) and the Louisiana National Guard (LANG) continue to monitor the potentially hazardous

    conditions in the event state assistance is needed and they have resources ready to deploy.

    BATON ROUGE, La. -- State police closed several Interstate 10 overpasses between Baton Rouge and Gonzales and part of Interstate 55 due to icy conditions for several hours.

    Icy conditions triggered a 15-vehicle wreck in southeastern Louisiana early Thursday as the state braced for freezing winter weather lasting into the start of the weekend.

    Ice also forced the closure of several Interstate 10 overpasses between Baton Rouge and Gonzales for a few hours early Thursday. The Sunshine Bridge over the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish was closed for a time, but reopened in time for rush hour.

    In anticipation of a bout of ice, sleet and possible snow into early Saturday, Gov. Bobby Jindal declared a statewide emergency, leading the state Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness to activate a crisis team to watch for dangerous conditions. Jindal said state police, the state highway department and the Louisiana National Guard were prepared with people and equipment.
