(CNN) -- Tens of millions of people are bracing for a major storm system poised to sweep through the central United States and beyond this week, according to weather forecasters.

Chicago, where a blizzard watch already has been issued, is expecting a snowstorm of historic proportions.

"This storm could be one of the top 10 biggest snowstorms ever in the city," said CNN meteorologist Sean Morris. The
same system is expected to coat large sections of the country's midsection in a thick blanket of snow, he said.

According to the National Weather Service, snowstorms that drop over 15 inches of snow occur once in about every 19 years in Chicago. The last time this happened was in January of 1999, when 21.6 inches of snow was recorded in the city.

In total, more than 20 states fall under winter storm advisories, watches or warnings, stretching from New Mexico in the southwest to Vermont in the northeast.

Forecasters have said the "dangerous storm" will begin to affect Missouri and Illinois, which were under storm warnings, as early as Monday.

    More:
Several major Midwest metropolitan areas are bracing for a massive winter storm system that threatened to dump a foot or more of snow and bring potentially debilitating winds.

More of the bad weather that has delayed, bumped and stranded passengers this winter, is on the way, forecasters said Monday.

With a snow storm of historic proportions expected in Chicago, Illinois, and large sections of the country's midsection, some airlines are already allowing passengers to change plans.

      Dangerous, wide-reaching winter storm ahead

A crippling winter storm will impact much of the eastern two-thirds of the country this week. Before the storm exits the country on Wednesday night, heavy snow and damaging icing is likely across parts of the southern Plains, Midwest and Northeast; severe weather, including some tornadoes, and heavy rainfall are likely in the South; strong winds will lead to blizzard or near-blizzard conditions for parts of the Plains, Midwest and possibly parts of the interior Northeast. Dangerously cold wind chills are likely as well in portions of the Central U.S. overnight through Wednesday.

A huge and potentially historic winter storm is taking shape over the Southern Plains today. By the time the storm exits New England on Wednesday night, as many as 50 million Americans may see heavy snows of at least 6 inches or dangerous ice accumulations of 1/4" or more from the massive storm, and 100 million will be affected by the storm. A potent jet stream with strong winds will dive southwards over the central U.S. today, allowing a cold Arctic airmass to spill southwards out of Canada. In front of this cold air, a flow of very warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico will surge northwards, providing copious moisture to fuel snowfall amounts that will likely approach two feet across portions of Iowa and Illinois on Tuesday....

Midwest braces for monster winter blizzard

              By Mary Wisniewski
              CHICAGO | Mon Jan 31, 2011 7:41pm EST

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Midwest braced for a massive and potentially dangerous winter storm on Monday with forecasts of up to 2 feet of snow and strong winds that could make travel virtually impossible.
              ...

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning and hazardous weather outlook for the Chicago area, calling for frigid temperatures, wind gusts as high as 50 miles per hour and heavy snow on Tuesday.

The storm could be the biggest since a 1967 blizzard paralyzed the city, Chicago officials said.

ST. LOUIS ? As a monster storm began to bear down on the middle of the nation Tuesday, those in its frigid and dangerous path could only hope it wouldn't live up to the hype.

The storm threatened to leave up to a third of the nation covered in a hodge-podge of brutal winter weather. Its reach was impressive: Snow and ice could fall along a 2,000-mile stretch from Colorado to Maine, tornadoes were possible in the South, and the weather was disrupting millions of people from Super Bowl travelers to schoolchildren.

Early indications were ominous. By mid-morning, freezing rain and sleet were already pelting several states from Texas through Ohio. Parts of southwest Missouri already had 6 inches of snow by 8 a.m. About 3,000 were without power in Ohio, 2,600 in Oklahoma. Roads were ice-covered and virtually impassable in several states.

According to one of our local tv stations, our entire viewing area has gone under a blizzard warning until Wednesday at 7 p.m.

That includes about 12 counties, including 3 in Michigan to the north and La Porte to LaGrange, west to east.

The weatherman said last night that if we get the snow and winds predicted, we could have up to 5 foot drifts in the rural areas. So far, things are calm but winds are expected to pick up this afternoon.

Snow storm update: Rolling black-outs in Dallas, stranded in Illinois

A Massachusetts iReporter is dwarfed by a mound of snow.

A massive snowstorm blasted the United States heartland and brought blizzard conditions to three-quarters of the country. Chicago, Illinois, was sacked with more than two feet of snow. The city closed schools for the first time in 12 years. The ice and snow affected areas from New England to New Mexico. Thousands are without power. Most officials are urging people not to travel unless it's absolutely necessary. Share your snow images with CNN iReport.
