    Massive wildfires burned out of control in Napa and Sonoma counties early Monday, destroying hundreds of homes and businesses, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people and shutting down major roadways as firefighters sought to halt the advance of infernos that were driven by powerful winds.

    There was no immediate estimate of the damage or the extent of injuries, but vast swaths of land were burning in both counties.

    One blaze in and around northern Santa Rosa called the Tubbs Fire had burned at least 20,000 acres by 8 a.m. Scores of homes were lost in the Journey?s End Mobile Home Park on Mendocino Avenue, while the nearby Fountaingrove Inn burned, as did the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country and a Kmart store. And that was just the beginning.

    Residents in the area described fleeing for their lives in the middle of the night from the fire, in cars or on foot. Hundreds of firefighters were on scene...

    Northern California fires live coverage: Firestorm one of the worst in state history

    Thousands evacuated their homes in Napa Valley, Sonoma and six other counties overnight as multiple fires ravaged the area.
    What you need to know:
    • At least 1,500 structures have been destroyed in more than 14 fires, covering a collective 57,000 acres.
    • Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties.
    • The Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa has burned 35,000 acres and has residents running for their lives. Two Santa Rosa hospitals have been evacuated.
    • No deaths have been reported, though people are being treated at local hospitals for injuries.
    • There are three evacuation centers for Napa County residents: Calistoga Fairgrounds, Napa Valley College and Crosswalk Community Church, which authorities report is full.

      Oct. 11, 2017, 8:23 a.m. At least 17 people have died in Northern California fires that continue to ravage multiple counties, while the Anaheim Hills fire in Southern California has scorched between 5,000 to 6,000 acres.
      What you need to know:
      • Fire officials reported 17 fire-related deaths as of Tuesday evening. Eleven died in Sonoma County, three in Mendocino County, two were in Napa County and one was in Yuba County. Local hospitals are treating others for injuries.
      • At least 1,500 structures have been destroyed in more than 15 Northern California fires, covering collectively more than 115,000 acres.

        • Fire officials reported 31 fire-related deaths as of Thursday. Seventeen people died in Sonoma County, eight in Mendocino County, two in Napa County and four in Yuba County. Local hospitals are treating others for injuries.
        • U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has suspended enforcement in areas affected by the fires, including evacuation zones, fire shelters and food banks.
        • Thousands of structures have been destroyed in 15 Northern California fires, covering collectively more than 212,000 acres.
        • Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties.
