    Tsunami warning for New Zealand

LATEST: A 7.8 quake that hit 800km off the coast of New Zealand has sparked a tsunami warning for the country.

The quake hit at 7.03 this morning and was felt in Wellington.

US Geological Service said a tsunami warning had been issued for New Zealand, affecting East Cape, North Cape, Gisborne and Auckland.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu said if a tsunami occurred, it would arrive at Gisborne at 8.59am and at Auckland about 10am..

However, a New Zealand Civil Defence spokesman said there was a "potential" tsunami threat but it had not issued its own warning.
Civil Defence was monitoring the situation and would give an update every hour, until a cancellation was issued.

People in coastal areas should stay off beaches, keep out of the water - including rivers and estuaries - and not go sightseeing, Civil Defence said.

NZ tsunami warning downgraded after 7.8 quake

          breaking news updated 08:20
Published: 7:15AM Thursday July 07, 2011 Source: ONE News

          Source: ONE News <!---->

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) says there is the potential for a small tsunami to hit New Zealand after a powerful 7.8 earthquake struck off the Kermadec Islands.
          ...
Earlier there was a tsunami advisory warning issued for the Pacific by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre but Barry Hirshorn from the centre told Breakfast just after 8am it had cancelled its tsunami warning. It said "fairly small" wave was now expected.

Civil Defence's David Coetzee told TV ONE's Breakfast MCDEM weren't warning of a huge wave but there would be many swells and there is a marine threat.

"We are not talking about one wave quickly and it's over, it will be pretty turbulent for the rest of the day," Coetzee said.

He said boaties should secure their boats.

"We are not talking about significant land damage or that boats will be snapped, it's just a dangerous situation to be in the water."

He said any surge is likely to be about a metre high on current estimates.

"We have issued the warning to the whole of New Zealand but the areas from North Cape to Hawke's Bay are more prone today."
          ...
If there is a tsunami, it is estimated it would hit New Zealand at these times:

          East Cape - 8.52am
          North Cape - 8.54am
          Gisborne - 8.59am
          Auckland's east coast - 10am

Re: Magnitude 7.8 - Kermadec Islands Region - Tsunami warning for New Zealand - cancelled

Tsunamis had struck the Kermadec Islands and Raoul Island this morning. The waves were 68cm and 1m high.

The PTWC had issued a tsunami warning for Tonga and New Zealand, affecting Northland, the Bay of Plenty, and East Coast of the North Island, but has now cancelled this.

Gisborne Civil Defence controller Jon Davies said a small wave had been generated which had created a marine threat only.

There was no threat to land and no evacuations were planned.

Civil Defence admits mixed messages over tsunami

              By Paul Harper

              10:34 AM Thursday Jul 7, 2011

The New Zealand Civil Defence acknowledges there were mixed messages with this morning's tsunami warning following this morning's 7.6 magnitude earthquake off the Kermadec Islands.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued and cancelled its tsunami warnings before the Civil Defence, however the PTWC warnings are not an official status for New Zealand.

Civil Defence advisories are the official status for New Zealand.

Civil Defence operations manager David Coetzee said there were mixed messages as to the warning situation this morning.

"I appreciate it can be pretty confusing," he said.

Areas of New Zealand took no chances after tsunami warnings Civil Defence has admitted were "confusing"...

Cancellation of Tsunami Warning to Auckland 02

Auckland Civil Defence has been advised that there is no further tsunami risk to Auckland from the earthquake that occurred at the Kermadec Islands today at 7:03am today. However, as a precaution, Auckland Civil Defence is continuing to monitor the situation.
                  • Wave activity around New Zealand is expected to continue but to decline in height over the next few hours.
                  • There is still a likelihood of strong currents in coastal areas.
                  • Beach areas should now be safe, however people should remain alert for unusual sea activity.
?Today was a timely reminder about the very real need that an emergency can happen at any time and everyone must be prepared,? said Auckland Civil Defence Controller Clive Manley.
