GULFPORT, Miss. The Mississippi Sierra Club is asking for more state and federal assistance before the oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil-rig spill reaches Mississippi's shores.

"We have not seen the response we asked for," Louie Miller, senior regional representative with the Mississippi Sierra Club, said during a news conference Saturday. Miller said he was offended by Gov. Haley Barbour's downplaying the spill Friday and said the Coast needs the governor to coordinate the cleanup effort and to ask for federal help.

"This is a disaster of epic proportions," he said, and compared the oil spill to Chernobyl, the 1986 Russian nuclear power-plant disaster. A military response similar to what was mounted after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 is what is needed, Miller said.

Terese Collins, president of Gulf Islands Conservancy, said there is no one in charge of the cleanup and volunteers are scattered among various groups along the Coast. Officials won't even begin training volunteers because the oil hasn't yet reached the Mississippi Coast, she said.
