    People have reported seeing mysterious lights in the Linville Gorge area for decades. They are known as the Brown Mountain Lights. Some people say they look like fireworks coming off the mountain. Other reports say they look like hovering orbs of bright light.

    In 1913 and again in 1922, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) came to the area to investigate.

    They visited different locations in the region and logged reports. All the sightlines crossed over Brown Mountain, which is how these mysterious lights were named.

    The official report from the U.S.G.S. determined the lights were likely from train headlights or city lights as the region became electrified. However, sightings continued even after the train tracks were washed out. Fascination and lore only grew...
