Rescue teams on standby for stranded dolphins off Everglades

MIAMI ? Rescue teams are on standby in case more dolphins are spotted in shallow waters off the western edge of Florida's Everglades.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's fisheries service, 81 false killer whales had died or been euthanized by Monday afternoon.

The Coast Guard first spotted the large, black dolphins Saturday in the Gulf of Mexico off southwest Florida. NOAA officials say over a dozen more dolphins had been spotted over the weekend off Hog Key but haven't been found.

More than 80 of the 95 beached dolphins died, including 10 that had to be euthanized. Another dozen dolphins were spotted, but scientists don?t know what happened to them. They might still strand in another spot, Mase said. The dolphins were off various ages and both genders.
?We?ve never dealt with a mass stranding this size in the Southeast,? Mase said this week. ?We?re trying to expedite this just to get more answers.?
