Giant waves expected to hit Istanbul

    Thursday, January 21, 2010
    ISTANBUL ? Dogan News Agency
Meteorology officials said tsunami-like giant waves of up to 7 meters are expected to hit the western Black Sea shores of Istanbul near the northern Bosphorus entrance at Kilyos and Demircik?y.

According to weather forecasts, winds of 50 knots will cause the system to reach a speed of up to 113 kilometers per hour and cause larger-than-average waves. The winds will begin to gain strength Friday after midday before transforming into gale-force winds. Friday?s waves are expected to be 3 to 4 meters in height.

Weather forecasts call for extreme cold and heavy snow on land for Friday. Snow is expected in northern Thrace as the storm breaks on Friday while the freezing precipitation is expected to reach Istanbul on Friday at midnight and become heavier Saturday afternoon.

The winds are expected to reach over 110 kilometers per hour early Saturday. Meanwhile, winds are forecast to be strongest at sea.

The 7-meter tall waves could present a high risk of danger for ships and navigators. The winds are expected to calm slightly Saturday evening, losing strength only Sunday afternoon
