

One girl with severe cerebral dysfunction and two with critical illness

One of the girls was taken to the Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical treatment.
Two new cases of severe influenza in children were reported in Hong Kong. A 26-month-old girl developed fever and vomiting yesterday (17th), followed by cramps, and was taken to the Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital today (18th). He sought medical treatment and was admitted to the hospital for treatment. On the same day, he was transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the hospital for further treatment. The patient's nasopharyngeal sample was tested and confirmed to be positive for influenza A (H1) virus. The clinical diagnosis was influenza A with cerebral lesions, and the child was in critical condition.
Initial investigations revealed that the patient had not been vaccinated against seasonal influenza this season, had not travelled during the incubation period, and had no symptoms in their home contacts.
Another girl, a 29-month-old girl with good health, had fever, cough, runny nose, and convulsions since Sunday (12th). She was taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Tuen Mun Hospital on Monday (13th) and admitted to the hospital for treatment. She was then transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the hospital for further treatment. The patient's nasopharyngeal secretion sample was tested and confirmed to be positive for influenza A (H1) virus. The clinical diagnosis was influenza A with brain lesions. The patient is currently in a serious condition.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the girl had not received the seasonal flu vaccine this season, and had not travelled during the incubation period. The patient's sister was recently diagnosed with influenza A and recovered, and her father also had fever recently and had sought medical treatment. Symptoms appear.
