13 travellers ill with food poisoning
-------------------------------------
The Centre for Health Protection is investigating an imported food
poisoning case affecting 13 people.
The 7 men and 6 women, aged 21 to 54, came down with diarrhoea,
abdominal pain, vomiting and fever after lunch in a Bangkok
restaurant yesterday [6 Oct 2009]. They sought medical treatment, and
one is stable in hospital.
People, especially food handlers, should observe good personal, food
and environmental hygiene to prevent food-borne diseases. See

for prevention tips.

HealthMap Alerts via PRO/MBDS
<promed-mbds@promedmail.org>
[Although the outbreak is originated from a common contaminated meal,
the detailed clinical manifestations and severity are not reported.
In addition, the food menu is not provided in the above newswire as
the method of preparation of the foods and ingredients used might be
the vehicles of introduction of the food poisoning agent. Details on
the incubation period, period of time between ingestion of the meal
and the onset of illness, are not mentioned either.
More information from reliable sources on the etiology of this food
poisoning outbreak in Hong Kong residents returning from Bangkok,
Thailand would be highly appreciated.
During August 2008, 16 residents from Hong Kong reported to have
gastroenteritis symptoms after eating at a restaurant in Pattaya,
Thailand, while the etiology was not reported (see prior PRO/MBDS
posting Food poisoning - China (02): Hong Kong, SAR ex Thailand, RFI
20080818.2563).
