    November 13, 2006

Hong Kong, Macau and the Mainland have held their first drill in emergency preparedness and response for a public health crisis.

Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow said today's drill was a success and has bolstered communication and collaboration between the three jurisdictions.

The exercise tested their emergency response and notification mechanisms in handling cross-boundary public health emergencies. It also highlighted the importance of timely notification and collaboration in preventing avian flu and pandemic influenza.

About 40 public health professionals took part, with the scenario depicting a suspected human case of avian flu on the Mainland.

The three signed the Co-operation Agreement on the Response Mechanism for Public Health Emergencies in Kunming in October last year. According to it, should cross-border public health emergencies occur, health authorities will immediately notify each other and activate the emergency response mechanism, and form a joint public health emergency response team.

Director of Health Dr Lam Ping-yan said the three places convened a tele-conference during the exercise, as good communication boosts emergency response.
