Human adenovirus infection fluctuates and rises recently

    2024-07-23 05:15

Monitoring data from disease control departments show that human adenovirus infection has recently fluctuated and increased, and is more common among children and adolescents aged 0 to 10 years old. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health reminder of "early knowledge of human adenovirus" to remind the public to raise health awareness, strengthen personal protection, and guide children to develop good personal hygiene habits and take preventive measures.
    Human adenovirus
    Clinical symptoms
Human adenovirus is one of the important pathogens that cause acute respiratory tract infections in children. Due to the large number of types, it causes different clinical manifestations, mainly including acute respiratory tract infections, conjunctivitis and gastrointestinal diseases.
"Clinical symptoms may include fever, sore throat, cough, etc., which are not specific compared to other common respiratory viral infections, but there are large individual differences." Liu Gang, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Beijing Children's Hospital, introduced that some cases may manifest as persistent high fever, with body temperature mostly above 39°C, listlessness, poor complexion, and loss of appetite.
The main clinical symptoms of human adenovirus gastrointestinal infection are diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain; eye infection can manifest as keratoconjunctivitis, acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, etc.; urinary tract infection can manifest as hemorrhagic cystitis, etc.
    Most cases are mild
    Self-limiting
How is infection with human adenovirus generally treated? Liu Gang said that there is currently no "specific" antiviral drug or treatment for human adenovirus infection, and symptomatic and supportive treatment is the main treatment. Antibiotics such as azithromycin are ineffective against simple human adenovirus infection. When there is evidence of combined bacterial infection, the doctor will consider whether antibiotics are needed based on the child's condition.
Experts said that from clinical observation, most children infected with human adenovirus have mild symptoms, which are self-limiting and will not cause severe illness or complications. If the child's temperature exceeds 38.5℃, antipyretics can be taken symptomatically and scientifically, supplemented by physical cooling; if there is secretion causing nasal congestion, the nasal cavity can be cleaned with physiological sea salt water; if coughing and sputum occur, symptomatic atomization and expectorant drugs can be taken under the guidance of a doctor. Once the symptoms worsen, such as persistent high fever, palpitations, shortness of breath, etc., go to the hospital for treatment in time.
Experts from the Institute of Viral Diseases of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that the prevention of human adenovirus infection is similar to other common respiratory diseases. The key lies in raising awareness and strengthening personal protection. The following points should be focused on, including minimizing going out and going to crowded or poorly ventilated places during the epidemic period, avoiding close contact with infected people; developing good personal hygiene habits, washing hands frequently, and avoiding touching the eyes, nose, mouth and other parts with unclean hands; maintaining indoor ventilation to reduce the risk of transmission; and using chlorine-containing disinfectants to disinfect the environment or surfaces of objects that have been touched by infected people.
