What is the difficulty of treating critically ill patients? What specific measures can hospitals around the world take to cope with the coming peaks of severe cases? In response to these issues, a reporter from the People's Daily Health client interviewed Professor Qiu Yunqing, executive vice president of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control.

"Now that the number of infected people in various places has reached a relatively high level, it can be inferred that the peak of severe cases in various places may arrive in 2-3 weeks, so at this stage, hospitals at all levels urgently need to make preparations for treating severe patients." Qiu Yunqing told reporters. Because the peaks of infections vary from place to place, the peaks of severe cases will also vary. According to the development law of the virus, the peak of severe cases will generally appear 2 to 3 weeks after the peak of infection.

Qiu Yunqing mentioned, "At present, the intensive care units of hospitals in various places have reached a relatively saturated state. The treatment time for critically ill patients is generally relatively long, and it takes a long time for patients to recover when they are admitted to the hospital or intensive care unit. Therefore, the existing There may be a shortage of medical resources, and it will be a huge challenge for the medical resources and medical personnel in hospitals around the world to treat critically ill patients."

How to better deal with the coming peak of severe cases? Qiu Yunqing suggested, "From a personal point of view, the elderly and people with underlying diseases are the key groups that develop into severe diseases, so in the future, such people should take precautions on their own to avoid infection as much as possible; It must be paid attention to, and we should not be paralyzed. Many people still don’t know enough about the severity of the disease. It is recommended that such people or people with severe symptoms should undergo CT imaging examination and necessary early antiviral treatment at the early stage of infection.”

From the perspective of treatment, Qiu Yunqing suggested, "First of all, the hospital should quickly strengthen the treatment and treatment capabilities, expand the intensive care unit according to the characteristics of the hospital itself, and equip relevant treatment equipment; the expansion of professional medical personnel is also the focus of severe treatment. Hospitals can do a good job of personnel scheduling and conduct professional emergency training to deal with the treatment of critically ill patients; the government and hospitals must give medical staff a certain amount of substantive care and support, so that the value and ability of medical staff can be fully reflected.

So China hopes to be coming out of the woods with the New Year.
Presumably they are fairly confident that there won't be another variant to upset these expectations.
Yet given that the several major Covid variants seen to date appear to have bypassed much of the vaccination benefits, that seems quite uncertain.
