Zhang Zhujun, director of the Infectious Diseases Division of the Centre for Health Protection, Department of Health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, reported on the 14th that as of 0:00 that day, there were 1,043 new cases of new coronary pneumonia in Hong Kong (including 579 confirmed by nucleic acid testing and 464 positive by rapid antigen test), of which 23 were imported from abroad. She also revealed that the Omicron BA.5 variant virus strain was discovered for the first time recently, and the infected person was a 24-year-old man from Africa who came to Hong Kong.
According to Zhang Zhujun, the man took flight ET608 from Ethiopia to Hong Kong via Thailand on April 6. He tested negative at the airport. The nucleic acid test on the third day of the hotel isolation and the rapid test on the fourth day were both positive. He initially felt unwell, with symptoms such as fever and cough, and has since recovered. Whole gene analysis confirmed that it has the Omicron BA.5 variant virus strain. The man had no companions, and no related cases were found on flight ET608.
Zhang Zhujun said that the World Health Organization reported that BA.5 is one of the Omicoron subvariant virus strains, which has been found in South Africa and other countries and regions. As for the impact of the mutant strain on public health, including the transmission capacity, there is no detailed information. The health department will step up observation and surveillance, and track other people on the same floor as the quarantined hotel where the infected person is staying.
