    Nearly half a million residents in the Chinese city where the novel coronavirus first emerged may have been infected with COVID-19 -- almost 10 times its official number of confirmed cases, according to a study by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    The study used a sample of 34,000 people in the general population in Wuhan -- the original epicentre of the pandemic -- and other cities in Hubei province, as well as Beijing, Shanghai, and the provinces of Guangdong, Jiangsu, Sichuan and Liaoning to estimate COVID-19 infection rates.

    The researchers found an antibody prevalence rate of 4.43% for COVID-19 among residents in Wuhan, a metropolis of 11 million people. As of Sunday, Wuhan had reported a total of 50,354 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission...

    Wuhan pneumonia (new coronavirus disease, COVID-19) broke out in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. The official announcement of confirmed cases in Wuhan has so far totaled 50,354, but the medical journal "PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases" Recently published a research report of Wuhan University, the report inferred that there were 168,000 confirmed cases in Wuhan, of which two-thirds of asymptomatic infections were not included in official statistics at all.
    The report pointed out that Wuhan University conducted tests on 63,107 healthy people in Wuhan and other parts of China from March to May last year, and found that 186 of the 11,086 people from Wuhan were diagnosed, with a diagnosis rate of 1.68%. 226 of the 38,171 people in Hubei Province other than Wuhan were diagnosed, with a diagnosis rate of 0.59%; 53 out of 13,850 people in other provinces tested positive, with a diagnosis rate of 0.38%.
    The Wuhan University team calculated based on Wuhan’s population and infection rate. During the epidemic, there were 168,000 infections in Wuhan. As of May 19 last year, there were 50,340 confirmed cases in Wuhan. The number of confirmed cases requiring hospitalization accounted for 1/3 of all confirmed cases, and at least 2/3 of the confirmed cases were asymptomatic.
