Will China's poultry industry fall into the pig industry crisis? How to seize the opportunity? Five big names including Qiu Jiahui, Wang Lianzeng, Zhu Desan and Huang Nian have this to say...

In recent years, the consumer market demand for meat has undergone profound changes, and the poultry industry is facing new opportunities and challenges.
In this context, how can poultry farming companies cope with the ever-changing market situation? How can they meet new consumer demands? How can they better prevent and control diseases in chicken flocks? From May 11 to 16, Boehringer Ingelheim (hereinafter referred to as "Boehringer") organized the "China Poultry Development High-level Forum" in Germany. Senior managers from many companies in the white-feathered broiler, yellow-feathered broiler and laying hen fields participated in the discussion.
Interview subjects:
Qiu Jiahui, President of Harvest Holdings
Wang Lianzeng, Chairman of Huayu Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd.
Zhu Desan Executive Vice General Manager of Guangxi Zhushi Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd.
Claudia Garcia Meneses Head of Global Poultry Strategic Markets at Boehringer Ingelheim
Huang Nian, Head of China Poultry Business at Boehringer Ingelheim
1
The key to poultry disease control is prevention
Choosing the right products and services is the core
From a global perspective, what challenges does poultry farming currently face in terms of health management? Which diseases are of greatest concern? And how does Boehringer deal with these diseases?
Claudia Garcia Meneses: Our clients are poultry farmers around the world, facing multiple challenges brought by various diseases. These diseases have been prevalent for many years, and as the industry progresses, the epidemic patterns of these diseases are also evolving, and avian influenza is a typical example.
Boehringer Ingelheim has developed a dedicated poultry disease map, which identifies four key diseases as key areas for product innovation.
First and foremost is infectious bronchitis virus infection, a disease that matters to our customers, is constantly changing, and we are committed to continuing to innovate in this disease area.
The second is avian influenza. As we all know, avian influenza affects the development of the global industry, especially in China, which is the largest and most important market for this disease. In response to avian influenza, we strive to improve and launch different types of vaccine products. We also look forward to expanding our expertise from products to new heights and strengthening biosafety technical support.
The third disease is equally important, salmonellosis. The losses caused by salmonellosis are extremely serious, which is of great significance to our customers and also troubles Chinese customers. For this disease area, we pursue higher competitiveness and more innovation.
Finally, there is coccidiosis. Every chicken is at risk of coccidiosis, globally. The key point is that once a poultry flock is infected with coccidiosis, production performance will decline and it will be susceptible to other diseases.
We believe that these diseases will continue to be important, even over the next 15 years, and we are therefore working with our innovation division to ensure breakthrough innovations in these areas.
What are the most common diseases in yellow-feathered broiler farming? What experiences can you share with us in preventing and controlling these diseases?
Zhu Desan: At present, yellow-feathered broilers are basically free-range, and the most common diseases are avian influenza, etc., so the requirements for Marek's vaccine are very high.
In general, prevention is better than cure. Therefore, we should choose high-quality vaccines from large manufacturers, use scientific vaccination procedures, do vaccination in advance, and then cooperate with standardized breeding environment and rearing conditions, do a good job in all aspects of feeding and management, and raise chickens better.

Changing market conditions
Poultry enterprises should control investment speed and intensity
In your opinion, what are the obvious changes in China's white-feathered broiler industry in recent years? What are the future development trends?
Qiu Jiahui: The first change is the complexity of seed sources, and accordingly, the epidemic situation has become more complicated. In addition, the change in seed sources has caused huge differences in the performance of commodity generations at the slaughter end, and there have also been changes in the supply and demand sides. On the supply side, the scale is constantly expanding, and new entrants are constantly emerging. On the demand side, the staged integration is more obvious. In the white-feathered chicken industry, the proportion and scale of one-stop full-industry chain enterprises are constantly increasing. The second change is that full-industry chain enterprises are constantly exploring and moving forward in the field of cooked food.
Personally, I believe that China’s future development trend will be a model where the entire industrial chain dominates the mainstream. The scale will continue to grow, and merger trends and waves will continue to emerge.
At the same time, I personally believe that the rapid development of the white-feathered broiler industry and the surge in investment enthusiasm will pose a future crisis to the industrial chain.
Some even believe that the path that pigs have taken today may also be experienced by white chickens. This should arouse the attention and attention of practitioners in our 10 billion-level industrial chain, and we should control our investment speed and intensity and move forward steadily and safely.
3
What are the future development trends of the yellow-feathered broiler and laying hen industries?
Zhu Desan: As living standards continue to improve, people's demand for the taste and flavor of poultry meat will increase. Although the overall volume has been declining in the past two or three years, as the economy recovers, demand will slowly increase. In addition, the market's requirements for the quality of yellow-feathered broiler chickens, including appearance, flavor and taste, are getting higher and higher, and will continue to increase.
Wang Lianzeng: The future trend of my country's egg-laying chicken industry is basically the same as other industries. For example, pigs, broilers, and yellow chickens are basically in a saturated stage with a slight growth. In the future, both commercial chickens and egg-laying breeder chickens will become more and more concentrated, pay more attention to capacity optimization, and take the path of healthy and high-quality development. For example, various egg processing is one of the business orientations of the future market.
4
The path of steady and long-term high-quality development is a good way to cope with changes
Energy conservation, carbon reduction, and green environmental protection are the development trends of the poultry industry and also a social responsibility and obligation of enterprises. What specific measures does your company have in terms of sustainability?
Wang Lianzeng: My idea is that good quality is the best way to reduce costs, and good quality will bring more repeat customers. As the saying goes, choice is more important than effort. When Huayu started to build the parent stock, it had high requirements for site selection, and biosafety and disease purification must be in place. At each stage of the flock, Huayu will carry out various purification monitoring, understand the genetic performance of the disease through monitoring, lay a healthy foundation for disease purification, and thus reduce costs.
In addition, Huayu achieves self-sufficiency of electricity through solar power generation, and can also export electricity at critical times, so we are at the forefront of the industry in terms of waste treatment and other aspects. Huayu is the president unit of the association, and I am also a member of the National People's Congress. I set an example and serve as an industry model. This is a manifestation of Huayu's leading role in the industry.
What challenges did Huayu face in ensuring the safety of egg-laying breeder chickens? How did it overcome them?
Wang Lianzeng: Huayu has a history of more than 40 years. Therefore, Huayu has a good breeding foundation.
First, the domestic chickens raised by Huayu are world-class high-yield breeds introduced from the American company Hy-Line. At present, Hy-Line laying hens should still dominate in China.
Second, in terms of introducing new breeds, with the support of national policies, Huayu has made continuous efforts to reduce the impact of avian influenza. This year, Huayu successfully imported 73,000 breeding chickens, solving the problems of parent stock shortage and high-yield breeds in recent years.
