Weak immunity blamed for Chinese bird flu death
A PROBLEMATIC immunity system may cause people to become infected with bird flu, Wang Longde, Vice Minister of Health said in an online interview today.
Wang was explaining a mysterious bird flu death in China last month.
"We have anatomized several bird-flu-infected human bodies, finding that some of them had problems in thymus, a part of the immune system," Wang said.
Sick poultry can infect human beings, while a person's weak immunity can also cause the infection, Wang said.
"Our study on human case is still superficial, because rules are always found through analysis on mass cases," Wang said.
A 16-year-boy in Anhui Province died on bird flu last month, bringing the country's death toll from the virus to 15. Local authority did not provide information on how the student may have contracted the disease.
Wang said there had been is no sign of human-to-human transmission so far.
