Kiribati’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services has confirmed an increase in suspected cases of the new mosquito-borne disease, Chikungunya virus.

The Ministry’s Coordinator of Disease Outbreak, Teanibuaka Tabunga told Kiribati News that 422 out of 1287 cases reported have joint pains while 2.5 percent of cases have symptoms of acute fever and rash.

Teanibuaka said Kiribati has now confirmed its first case of the virus after 60 specimens were sent to reference laboratory overseas.

He said symptoms of the disease are being reported from most parts of South Tarawa and Betio.

Clinics there are sending blood specimens from suspected cases directly to laboratories for confirmation of cases.

The Ministry is urging the public on South Tarawa and Betio to use mosquito nets and repellants and to clean their compounds
