    Map of Dengue Infections Could Predict Map of Chikungunya Infections in Central and South America

    Chikungunya virus infections continue to spread into new countries and cases are increasing in affected countries. There are no epidemiological barriers that would halt the spread of the virus were it to become established in Central or South America. The vector mosquitoes are already present and sustaining dengue virus transmission. The same vectors can efficiently transmit chikungunya virus.

    The most realistic question is not if this virus will spread in Central and South America, but rather, when.
