The provinces of Panama and Panama West, the two hardest hit by the new coronavirus that has already killed 1,000 people in Panama and infected 50,373, are preparing to enter an absolute quarantine this weekend to try to lower the rapid contagion. of the virus.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) of Panama was forced to order a quarantine for 2.2 million people, from 7:00 p.m. Friday until 5:00 a.m. Monday, this after internists requested a 15-day quarantine to prevent the collapse of the health system.

70% of the tests to detect covid-19 are done in these provinces. Figures from the Minsa detail that 15,845 positive cases of covid-19, San Miguelito 7,372, Panam? Norte 4,081 and Panam? Oeste 8,730 have been reported in Panama Centro. This represents that 72% of the positivity of the cases are in Panama and West Panama.

For Thursday, July 16, in Panama there are 1,244 hospitalized patients and of them 1,078 are in the ward and 166 in the intensive care unit.

In the provinces of Panama and Panama West there are 843 people in a room of a public or private hospital. This represents that 78% of the people who are in hospitals throughout the country are concentrated in the provinces that go into absolute quarantine.

Meanwhile, of the 166 patients in intensive care units throughout the territory, 120 are concentrated in the provinces of Panama and Panama West. This is 72% of intensive care patients.

The Minsa lifted the absolute quarantine that existed for weekends in June and only applied on Sunday.

By that date, the gradual opening of block 2 began throughout the country, but the relaxation of the restrictions have led, according to the authorities themselves, to an increase in the positive cases of covid-19.

As cases increase and hospitals are saturated, Minsa has been forced to look for new places to increase the number of beds. 160 beds are expected to be available next week at the Figali Convention Center. Work is also underway to locate 750 beds in the new and modern Amador Convention Center. In addition, work will be done on adapting the Eastern Specialized Institute to place 130 beds.

These are part of the actions that are carried out with the aim of helping to decongest hospitals throughout the metropolitan area.

Other public and private facilities that can be used as alternate centers for mild or moderate covid-19 patients that will be kept under medical supervision, nurses and other health professionals are also studied.

The measure ordered by the Minsa forced the transport system to modify its hours of attention to the public. The Panama Metro will be closed this weekend and will return to operation on Monday from 5:00 a.m.

The Mi Bus company, in charge of the buses in Panama City, will have special hours, to offer the service to people who must move due to the condition of their work. For Saturdays and Sundays the hours will be from 5:00 a.m., until 8:00 a.m. Then they resume the service from 2:00 p.m. until 12 midnight.

The National Police reported that for Sunday, July 12, 606 people were detained for breaching the curfew, which was in force only for Sunday.

The authorities detailed in the official account of the entity on Twitter that, of the detained citizens, 512 were men, 70 women and 24 minors.
