After the case occurred in the town of El Platanal, Colón (brown pelican), epidemiological investigation teams were sent to track and verify the impact on wild and domestic birds in the area and surrounding communities: Ciri, Aguacate, Río Diego, El Limón, Boca de Toabré, Sabanita Verde, San Lucas, La Huaca and Cuatro Calles. As of February 12, 326 families were visited, with a total population of 1,920 backyard poultry (subsistence breeding). No affected birds have been reported in these communities; however, investigations are ongoing. On February 3, birds were reported affected in the communities of Santa María Belén, Province of Colón and Concepción in the Province of Veragua. Field visits were made and samples were taken, obtaining a confirmatory positive result for HPAI H5N1 on February 10. In the community of Santa María Belén, Province of Colón, depopulation teams were sent to cull 337 backyard poultry on site and in the neighboring community of Rio Veraguas, 756 birds were culled, for a total of 1,093 birds. In the community of Concepción in the Province of Veragua, depopulation teams culled 381 birds. In the community of Guázaro, 712 birds were culled. Epidemiological surveillance is being maintained in the community. Given the control and surveillance actions, and the absence of new cases of disease in wild and backyard birds within the focal, perifocal and surveillance zones corresponding to La Concepción, Río Guázaro and Santa María de Belén, these outbreaks have been closed.
