El Salvador reaches 323 cases of COVID-19 with 25 new infections

          04/27/2020 - 21:20

El Salvador reaches 323 cases of COVID-19 with 25 new infections

El Salvador registered 25 new local cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (causing the disease COVID-19), the highest number in the country since the pandemic began, according to official data consulted on Monday.

According to the Salvadoran president, Nayib Bukele, the country is "in the phase of total community transmission", so "the risk of contagion is extremely high."

The authorities carried out a total of 1,423 tests on Sunday, with which the new cases were detected, representing an increase of approximately 8.4%, compared to the 298 cases computed until Saturday.

The president also indicated that 6 more patients recovered to total 89; and 254 people were "healthy" quarantined, with a total of 4,646, and the number of detainees for allegedly skipping mandatory confinement is 2,323.

Figures from the Ministry of Health account for 226 active cases of COVID-19, of which 172 are without symptoms, 41 patients have a "stable", 4 "moderate", 5 "severe" and 4 "critical" medical prognoses.

The municipalities in the center of the country are the ones that register the most infections, with the capital San Salvador at the head (32 cases) and are followed by Soyapango (16), Apopa (9) and Ilopango (7).

A congressional commission on Monday discussed overcoming a presidential veto on a project that, according to lawmakers, seeks to facilitate the return of some 4,500 Salvadorans who remain outside El Salvador without being able to enter the country as a result of the pandemic.

The government has also been affected by its surveillance plans for the containment measures to contain COVID-19 by allocating elements of the security forces to combat a rise in homicides registered since Friday.

The Attorney General's Office (FGR) confirmed to Efe that 24 violent deaths were recorded on Friday, 12 on Saturday and 22 on Sunday, figures above the single-digit daily averages recorded during much of the Bukele administration.

Bukele, who has not pinpointed the reasons for this spike, attributes the rise to the gangs and ordered to tighten the prison security regime.

Data from the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) provided to Efe show that between Friday and Monday 85 homicides were carried out nationwide, with a daily average of 16.8. This figure is higher than the single-digit records computed in recent months.

The country's president, Nayib Bukele, has not pointed out the reasons for this sudden increase and attributes the rise to the gangs, so he ordered to tighten the prison security regime.

In addition to sealing the cells of some 16,000 gang members with metal plates, Bukele endorsed the Police and the Army to use "lethal force."

COVID-19 claims the life of a military man in El Salvador and adds 13 deaths
                        EFE - 05/04/2020, 07:25 PM

San Salvador, May 4 (EFE) .- A military man became the thirteenth victim of COVID-19 in El Salvador on Monday, bringing the death toll to 2.34% of infections, the Minister of Defense, Ren? Merino.

The minister pointed out that this is a 47-year-old military man, who also had diabetes.

"It is very hard for us to give this news, because we are the institution that is at the service of the country, protecting our population," said Merino.

He explained that the deceased was part of a Salvadoran military contingent that was deployed to Iraq and had been a member of the Army for 25 years.

He added that 5 other members of the Armed Forces have recovered from COVID-19 and that 4 more were subjected to tests, which were negative.

El Salvador detected 65 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, the highest daily number since the start of the pandemic, reaching 555.

"The trend in cases has risen dramatically, although it is also influenced by the substantial increase in the number of tests carried out," the president said on his Twitter account.

These cases represent an increase of approximately 13.3% compared to the previous day's count, when the cases were 490.

"It is clear that the next few days will be decisive and that, if this trend continues, our health system will collapse in a couple of weeks," the president warned.

He assured that "it is currently impossible" for the team in charge of facing the pandemic "to be faster in containing the virus than its spread."

Earlier, the Health Minister, Francisco Alab?, pointed out that the country registered "quite acceptable data", but pointed out that these "are not going to be maintained if the population does not comply with home quarantine."

The Executive and Legislative have decreed a mandatory household quarantine and a state of national emergency that will end on May 16, without the authorities ruling out the possibility of its extension.

"We have seen how this enthusiasm and strength to comply with the quarantine has been progressively lost and we understand that there are other important economic situations, but this disease is putting different countries in an extremely complicated situation," said Alab?.

According to official data, the country has carried out 30,387 tests to detect the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, while the people recovered from the disease total 180, the deceased 12 and the active cases 363.

The Government recently sent Congress "a series of sanitary and economic measures, so that we can better safeguard the health and economy of Salvadorans."

The leader of the Congress, Mario Ponce, called an extraordinary session of this State organ, in which the initiatives presented by the Executive are expected to be voted on. EFE

El Salvador recorded on Wednesday its fifteenth death from COVID-19, while infections rose 7.8% to 633 cases, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

The fifteenth victim of the disease is a 72-year-old woman, who had a "history of diabetes and hypertension" and was treated in an intensive care unit.

The country carried out 1,598 tests on Tuesday, with which 46 new infections of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus were detected, representing an increase of 7.8% and a cumulative of 633 cases.

The recovered persons add up to 219 and the "active" cases are 391, of which 310 patients do not present symptoms, 69 are stable, 4 have a "moderate" prognosis and 13 "severe". In "critical" state are 3 people.

The department of San Salvador is the epicenter of new coronavirus infections with 258 cases, 40.7%, followed by La Libertad (center) and Santa Ana (northwest) with 49 and 42, respectively.

The mandatory home quarantine and the national state of emergency will conclude on May 16, without the Salvadoran authorities ruling out a new extension.

The country's president, Nayib Bukele, announced Tuesday night on the national radio and television network that people will be restricted from leaving to buy food twice a week, previously set by terminating their identity number.

He also reported, without going into details, that the Government will deliver 2.7 million food packages to people affected by the stoppage of economic activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This announcement was made the same day that a group of social organizations denounced that "the lack of articulation of sanitary measures with economic ones has caused hunger cases to be registered."

                            CONTEMPORARY WITH COSTA RICA

During the presentation, Bukele criticized the strategy of combating COVID-19 in Costa Rica by allegedly decreasing the number of daily tests and said that this is "bread for today, hunger for tomorrow."

"What is happening is that they are not going to find the cases, they are not going to isolate them, they are not going to isolate the links," said the president, who added that this "generates an under-registration of deaths."

"Costa Rica would give us the false impression that they have flattened the curve, but they have only really lowered the amount of evidence," he said.

The Government of Costa Rica assured this Wednesday that President Bukele spoke "without any basis" to question the results of the Costa Rican authorities in controlling the pandemic.

"One is surprised and regrets hearing statements that have no basis. President Bukele was poorly advised, they gave him incorrect data," said Costa Rica's Foreign Minister Rodolfo Solano.

El Salvador imposes an absolute quarantine to stop the critical stage of COVID-19
This quarantine is installed the same day that a law that authorizes the arrest and confinement of people who violate home quarantine in "containment centers" takes effect.

San Salvador.- The security authorities of El Salvador imposed on Thursday an "absolute" and "rigid" quarantine throughout the country to try to stop the massive spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (causing the disease of COVID-19 ) and avoid the collapse of its health system, according to the Government.

This quarantine is installed the same day that a law passed by Congress that authorizes the Executive to detain and confine people who allegedly violate domiciliary quarantine comes into force.

"With all its defects, with all its imperfections, with the inconvenience it generates, with the attacks they make ... ... in this quarantine we are risking the future of our country and the health and lives of our families. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele said on his social networks.

The president warned since last May 3 that the country is in the "stage of maximum community contagion", so it was "on the way to the collapse of our health system", if no other actions were taken.

El Salvador has been in mandatory home quarantine since last March 21.

The main measure to prevent the mobility of citizens, even those who are authorized to leave due to the type of work they perform, is the ban on the circulation of public transport for fifteen days.

In the streets, the controls of the security forces were intensified and there is a considerable decrease in people transiting on foot, according to Efe in at least four points in the department of San Salvador.

Likewise, the public transport system stopped and only the personal vehicles of authorized workers, those contracted to transport personnel, and state vehicles that move health personnel circulate.

The head of the Salvadoran Government Cabinet, Carolina Recinos, warned at a press conference on Wednesday that it will be a "rigid, disciplined and" absolute "quarantine until May 21.

The Government's legal secretary, Conan Castro, added that "this is like a war" and that "we are not thinking about the economy, we are thinking about health."

Another of the measures established by the Government is the prohibition to move between the different municipalities, with the exception of people authorized to move and who work in activities related to health, agriculture, food distribution, among others.

Among the industries that are banned from their activities until next May 21 are alcoholic, carbonated, fried foods and bakery chains.

Furthermore, it assigns citizens two days a week so that they can go out to buy food and medicine according to the termination of their identity number.

El Salvador recorded its fifteenth death on Wednesday from COVID-19, while infections rose 9.8% to 695 cases, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
