The largest children's hospital in the Atlantic region will remove all magazines, books and toys from patient waiting areas to reduce the potential spread of swine flu, the IWK Health Centre said Thursday.
IWK officials said the recommendation comes from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Families with day appointments or who are coming into the emergency department at the IWK should bring their own washable toys and reading materials and take them home when they leave, the hospital said in a release.
The playrooms for patients staying at the hospital aren't affected by the communal toy ban.
Since the swine flu outbreak began in April, 17 people have been hospitalized and one person has died in Nova Scotia.
