Highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1 in British Columbia, October 21, 2024
Canadian Food Inspection Agency
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1 in two premises in Chilliwack and one premises in Abbotsford, British Columbia, in commercial poultry.
The CFIA has advised the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) of the confirmed presence of HPAI in Canada. This serves as a strong reminder that HPAI is spreading across the globe, and that anyone with birds must practice enhanced biosecurity procedures.

Three new cases of bird flu in B.C. poultry
10/23/24
Excerpt:
Canadian poultry flocks were briefly free of active HPAI cases. On Oct. 2, the CFIA revoked the last remaining primary control zone around an outbreak associated with a farm in Saskatchewan, an agency spokesperson said in an email yesterday.
This means that certain conditions had been met on the infected premises, and movement restrictions and permit requirements had been lifted.

Petting farm in Campbell River, B.C., culls entire bird flock over avian flu outbreak
A petting farm on Vancouver Island says it was forced to cull its entire flock of about 50 chickens and ducks when they contracted the highly infectious avian flu.

A petting farm on Vancouver Island says it was forced to cull its entire flock of about 50 chickens and ducks when they contracted the highly infectious avian flu.
In the post to social media, Holly Hill Farm in Campbell River says it is "devastated," noting each bird had a name, but it was forced to kill the flock "to prevent the spread and help protect food sources."
It says Island Health has assured them the risk to their guests is "extremely low," although recent visitors should monitor themselves for flu-like symptoms for 10 says after their visit to the farm.
A spokesman with Island Health confirmed it had been made aware of the outbreak, saying its public health communicable team is monitoring the situation...

This event is the continuation of event 4294. We report 7 new infected premises (IP) in British Columbia. The CFIA has immediately quarantined the IPs and is implementing strict movement controls and a stamping out policy. Primary control zones (PCZ) have been put in place around the IPs. Surveillance is ongoing in the affected areas. HPAI outbreaks are closed, zoning and movement restrictions were lifted, and quarantines were released on all poultry infected premises in all provinces, except British Columbia and Saskatchewan. WOAH data on poultry and non-poultry can be visualized and extracted on the HPAI dashboard in domestic birds available at https://cahss.ca/cahss-networks/poultry-new (select poultry categories to show data related to poultry events 4294 and 5229). Wildlife surveillance as well as the Canadian Notifiable Avian Influenza Surveillance System (CanNAISS) activities for poultry are ongoing in Canada. QUANTITATIVE DATA SUMMARY MEASURING UNIT
