Hardbeatnews, TORONTO, Canada, Weds. Dec. 6, 2006: Canadian international travelers are being warned to get preventative shots against malaria if they are traveling to Jamaica. The Public Health Agency of Canada is advising Canadians to consult their doctor or a travel clinic prior to international travel to determine their individual health risks and their need for vaccination, preventative medication and personal protective measures.
The agency also warned Canadians who become sick or feel unwell on their return to Canada to seek a medical assessment with their personal physician.
Currently, fifteen cases of malaria have been confirmed in three neighborhoods within Kingston, Jamaica and two cases have been reported in Sydenham, in the adjacent province of St. Catherine?s. One case has been reported in a US traveler returning from Jamaica according to the Pan American Health Organization. The outbreak is the first in 50 years.
The Jamaican Ministry of Health says it is undertaking intensive measures to control and contain the outbreak, including active case detection and treatment; mosquito control including insecticide spraying, larviciding, source reduction; and health education of the local population.
Malaria is an acute flu-like illness caused by one of four species of parasite of the genus Plasmodium.
The disease is most commonly transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, specifically the female Anopheles mosquito, a dusk-to-dawn biter.
Meanwhile, yesterday, the main opposition Jamaica Labor Party blamed the immigration of Haitians to the island on the disease outbreak. ? Hardbeatnews.com
