Premier Blaine Higgs says he hopes to be able to make an announcement before the end of the week related to loosening COVID-19 restrictions that will "take the steam out of" any planned protests of COVID mandates.
His comments come as Public Health reported six more New Brunswickers who had COVID-19 have died. Their deaths mark 41 COVID-related deaths since the province returned to the less restrictive Level 2 of the COVID-19 winter plan Jan. 28 at 11:59 p.m., two days ahead of schedule
The number of people in hospital remains stable Tuesday at 151, while the number of people requiring intensive care has increased by one, to 17. Eight of them are on ventilators.
A so-called Freedom Convoy is being organized at the provincial legislature this weekend to "gridlock" the downtown, in support of the anti-vaccine mandate convoy protest in Ottawa, now in its 12th day.
New Brunswick Public Safety officials are working with the Fredericton Police Force and the RCMP to "come up with a plan to be ready," said Higgs...Comment

New Brunswick will move to Level 1, the least restrictive level of the COVID-19 winter plan, on Feb. 18 at 11:59 p.m., Premier Blaine Higgs announced Wednesday, as the province recorded six more COVID-related deaths.
The decision was based on the advice of Public Health, he said.
By the end of the winter, he hopes to lift all COVID restrictions, later defining that as the end of March.
Hospitalizations will need to decrease as projected, he noted, and it will have to be based on science.
But the end of the mandates "is definitely in sight," Higgs told a COVID briefing...
...The six deaths confirmed Wednesday mark 47 in 12 days, since the province returned to Level 2 from the most restrictive Level 3.
The latest deaths are spread across the province, the dashboard shows.
They include a person in their 60s in the Moncton region, Zone 1, a person in their 70s and another in their 90s in the Saint John region, Zone 2, a person in their 70s in the Edmundston region, Zone 4, a person in their 80s in the Bathurst region, Zone 6, and a person in their 80s in the Miramichi region, Zone 7.
Of the 139 people in hospital — 62 of them for COVID-19, while the other 77 were originally admitted for something else when they tested positive for the virus, according to dashboard,
Fifteen people are in intensive care, a decrease of two, and seven of them are on ventilators, down one.
The seven-day average of hospitalizations decreased to 156 from 159, while the seven-day average of the number of people in intensive care remained steady for a fifth day at 16.

Through PCR (polymerase chain reaction) lab tests, Public Health confirmed 321 new cases of COVID, putting the province's active case count at 3,315.

N.B. reports 3 more COVID-19 related deaths Thursday, slight increase in hospitalizations

Health officials in New Brunswick reported three more deaths related to COVID-19 on Thursday.
According to the province’s online dashboard, the deaths involve:
a person in their 40s in the Saint John region (Zone 2)
a person aged 90 and over in the Saint John region (Zone 2)
a person aged 90 and over in the Fredericton region (Zone 3)
There have been 278 deaths related to COVID-19 reported in New Brunswick since the start of the pandemic.
According to the province, 54.55 per cent of the deaths have been in people with partial or no vaccine protection, while 45.45 per cent were "protected," which public health defines as boosted or fully vaccinated less than six months.
HOSPITALIZATIONS
According to the province’s online dashboard, a total of 140 people were hospitalized as of Thursday-- an increase of one person since Wednesday.
Of those in hospital, 63 were admitted due to COVID-19, while 77 were admitted for other reasons, but tested positive for the virus.
Fifteen people are in intensive care with COVID-19 on Thursday. Of those, 13 patients were admitted to the unit due to the virus, and two were admitted for other reasons, but have tested positive for COVID-19.
Eight people are currently on ventilators in New Brunswick.
NEW CASES
There were 351 new PCR-confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported Thursday in New Brunswick.
Officials also reported 605 new cases using rapid tests...Comment

Four more New Brunswickers who had COVID-19 have died, and the head of the New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes says the virus is spreading faster than ever before in homes across the province.
The deaths include a person in their 80s in the Saint John region, Zone 2, a person in their 80s in the Bathurst region, Zone 6, and two people in their 90s in the Miramichi region, Zone 7, according to the COVID dashboard.
No other information about them, including whether they died from COVID or just had COVID when they died, their vaccination status or any underlying health conditions have been released...

The number of people in hospital decreased by five Friday to 135, including 13 people in intensive care, down two. Eight of them are on ventilators, unchanged.
Of those in hospital, 62 of them were admitted for COVID-19, while the other 73 were originally admitted for something else when they tested positive for the virus, according to the dashboard.
Five people 19 or under are hospitalized. Three people in their 40s are the youngest requiring intensive care.
The seven-day average of hospitalizations decreased again to 148 from 152, while the seven-day average of the number of people in intensive care remained steady for a seventh straight day at 16.
The key metric the province uses to assess whether to tighten or loosen restrictions — the seven-day average of new daily hospital admissions — is still not available to the public.

New Brunswick recorded four more COVID-related deaths on Saturday as the province prepares to enter its final week of Level 2 restrictions.
The deaths include a person in their 70s and two people in their 80s who lived in the Moncton region and a person in their 90s who lived in the Edmundston region, according to the dashboard.
The province announced 303 PCR-confirmed positives Saturday, putting the province's case count at 3,682. That's an increase of 88 cases from Friday.
An additional 477 people reported positive results from rapid tests.
Since the start of the pandemic, 286 people have died from COVID-19 in New Brunswick.
122 in hospital, including four 19 or under
There are 122 people in hospital, a decrease from 135 on Friday.

New Brunswick has announced four more COVID-related deaths, bringing the province's total to 290.
The deaths announced Sunday include a person in their 70s, one in their 80s and one in their 90s in the Moncton region, and a person in their 80s in the Miramichi region.
New Brunswick Public Health reported 266 PCR-confirmed cases, bringing the province's total active case count to 3,573.
Another 428 positive results from rapid tests were reported Sunday.
There have now been 25,971 confirmed cases through rapid tests since Jan. 5.
116 in hospital
Hospitalizations dropped again Sunday to 116, a decrease from 122 Saturday.
Of those in hospital, 59 were admitted with COVID-19 and 57 were originally admitted for another reason when they tested positive.
There are 15 people in intensive care, including a person in their 20s, and eight people are on a ventilator...Comment

New Brunswick is reporting two new COVID-19 related deaths, along with 112 hospitalizations on Monday.
A person 90 and over has died in Zone 1, the Moncton region, and a person in their 70s has died in Zone 3, the Fredericton region.
According to the province’s online COVID-19 dashboard, of the 112 people in hospital, 54 were admitted for COVID-19, while 58 patients contracted the virus while hospitalized. Thirteen patients are in intensive care.

Another New Brunswicker with COVID-19 has died and the province has three more confirmed cases of the highly transmissible COVID-19 Omicron subvariant called BA.2.
Hospitalizations dropped by 11 Tuesday to 101, according to the COVID-19 dashboard. That's the lowest they've been in a month.
Eleven people are in intensive care, down two, and seven of them on ventilators, unchanged.
The latest death is a person in their 90s in the Saint John region, Zone 2, the dashboard shows. This marks 65 COVID-related deaths in the 18 days since the province moved to Level 2 from the most restrictive Level 3, and 293 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Department of Health spokesperson Bruce Macfarlane confirmed the additional cases of BA.2 in an email to CBC News.
He did not respond to a request for other information about the cases, including their location, symptoms, whether they are hospitalized, their vaccination status, or whether they have any underlying health conditions.
BA.2 is believed to be about 30 per cent more transmissible than the BA.1 Omicron variant that has caused a surge in hospitalizations and cases during the fifth wave of the pandemic...Comment
