N.B. COVID-19 roundup: 7 new cases, most people in hospital since pandemic began
Elizabeth Fraser ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 08, 2021 11:12 AM AT | Last Updated: 17 minutes ago

New Brunswick has seven new cases of COVID-19 and 20 people in hospital ? a record high since the pandemic began, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jennifer Russell announced Thursday.

Six of the new cases are in the Edmundston region, Zone 4, where 115 of the province's 146 active cases are located.

"The sustained outbreak is continuing despite our best efforts to limit it," Russell said, noting it is largely driven by the highly transmissible COVID-19 variant first reported in the U.K.

Public Health is "very concerned" and the region must remain at the red COVID alert level "for the time being" to allow contact tracing to continue, she said during a live COVID briefing in Fredericton...

New Brunswick?s chief medical officer of health confirmed Saturday another COVID-19 death in New Brunswick, of an individual in their 70s in Zone 4 (Edmundston region).

This brings the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 to 33. It?s also the third death this week.

Dr. Jennifer Russell said that public health will now operate under the assumption that all confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 are one of the variants of concern, which are highly infectious and easily transmittable.

She said the continued rise of cases along with the rising numbers of hospitalization provides stark evidence of this.

?This is no longer business as usual,? said Russell at the COVID-19 briefing on Saturday.
Russell said these new cases are straining the province?s healthcare system, particularly in Zone 4, where 15 cases of the 19 new ones have been confirmed.According to the province, two of the new cases are in the Fredericton area (Zone 3), one in the Moncton area (Zone 1), and one in the Saint John area (Zone 2)...

Two confirmed cases of the variant first detected in South Africa have been identified in New Brunswick.

In a news release Monday, Public Health said the two cases were reported in the Saint John region, Zone 2. They are the first confirmed cases of that variant identified in New Brunswick, which until now has only seen cases of the variant first reported in the U.K.

One of the cases is related to travel outside of Canada and the other is a contact of that travel case, the department said in the release.

The variant is more transmissible and causes more serious outcomes than the original coronavirus...
