Severity soars among influenza A cases in Hanoi

The capital city of Hanoi has witnessed a rise in influenza A cases over the past two weeks, with an increasing number of patients relying on mechanical ventilation.

The National Hospital of Tropical Diseases says it is currently performing treatment for over 10 severe flu cases suffering from underlying health conditions. Of them, a 66-year-old patient who also has type 2 diabetes, was infected with both influenza A and COVID-19. He has since been put on a breathing machine due to severe respiratory failure.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics has also received 100 to 150 children each day for examination and treatment after showing signs of the flu. Particularly, 15% of the infected children have been hospitalised in need of medical care.

Some severe cases have also suffered from lung damage after a few days of virus infection.

According to the Ministry of Health, seasonal flu is primarily caused by influenza viruses, mostly A/H1N1, A/H3N3, and Influenza B.

The ministry also affirms there are no records of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) viruses causing infection in humans, such as A/H5N1, A/H5N6, and A/H7N9.

In the past 2 weeks, many hospitals in Hanoi have received a large number of patients, mainly tested and diagnosed with influenza A. Worth mentioning, there are many cases of severe respiratory failure, requiring mechanical ventilation.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health, through monitoring of influenza cases, show that the main strains of influenza virus causing illness are: influenza A(H1N1), A(H3N2) and influenza B. Currently, no influenza virus strains have been recorded. highly virulent and transmitted from poultry to humans, such as: influenza A(H5N1), A(H5N6) or A(H7N9).

At the Central Tropical Diseases Hospital, more than 10 cases of influenza A are being treated in severe condition. There is a case of critical influenza A infection requiring dialysis and mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Department.

At the National Children's Hospital, among the children who come for examination and are prescribed tests every day, there are about 100-150 cases with results of influenza, mainly influenza A, of which, 15% are severe cases. must be hospitalized for treatment. Most children with flu are hospitalized for treatment due to complications from pneumonia and require oxygen. There are even cases of respiratory failure, requiring mechanical ventilation due to flu infection on top of heart disease and pulmonary embolism...

Dr. Vu Ngoc Long - Deputy Head of the Infectious Disease Control Department, Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health) - information: From the infectious disease surveillance system, the flu situation in Vietnam in recent weeks shows that although Although there is an increase in cases, it is not unusual. Because this is the time of winter-spring transition, the weather changes erratically, sometimes warm, sometimes cold, which is favorable for the development of respiratory diseases, including the agents that cause influenza.

Experts also note that there is no scientific evidence that people who have Covid-19 and then get influenza A will have a more severe illness, however, if they are infected at the same time, there is a risk of severe progression.

Unlike the common cold, the flu often occurs with a sudden onset of symptoms. Common signs of flu infection include: Runny or stuffy nose; headache; fever; muscle pain; tired; sore throat; cough…

Mild flu A symptoms may go away on their own with plenty of rest and adequate fluid intake. However, for more severe flu infections, your doctor may prescribe antiviral medications to fight the infection.
