Sri Lanka reports first swine flu case
COLOMBO (AFP) ? Sri Lanka said on Tuesday that a 12-year-old girl returning home from Singapore was diagnosed with A(H1N1) influenza, the island's first swine flu case.
The student was moved to the Infectious Diseases Hospital on the outskirts of the capital, a health ministry official said.
There are no reports of suspected Swine Flue infections in Sri Lanka; however it is prudent to adopt precautionary measures all over the world as there is a risk of spreading this infection to Asian countries. Sri Lankan health authorities have taken measures to detect and prevent spreading of Swine flu virus. Apr 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka Health officials have taken measures to prevent a possible spreading of a viral fever, originated in Mexico and spread to US, Canada and some European countries.
Health minister Nimal Sripala De Silva said that the Health Ministry is on attention over the possible entry of this swine flu virus into the country.
The viral strain has killed 103 people in Mexico and infected several people in the United States and Canada.
The Ministry has deployed a few specialists at the Colombo Harbour and the Katunayake International Airport to spot the infected individuals entering into the country.
The Health Ministry warns the people who wish to travel to Mexico and other countries where the virus was reported, to pay more attention to symptoms.
Mexico's government has cautioned its people not to shake hands or to share food, glasses or cutlery for fear of infection.
Swine influenza is a respiratory disease that infects pigs and does not normally infect humans. Humans can occasionally catch the flu from pigs but rarely pass it on to other people.

June 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka Health Ministry today issued a severe warning for the passengers who reached the country via Singapore Airlines flight number SQ 466 on last Sunday over Swine Flu.
Following the detection of the first Swine Flu case in the country on an 8-year-old boy, arrived from Australia, the Health ministry strongly advised those passengers on the Singapore Airlines flight to get tested for the virus.
The government has decided to subject all the passengers and crew on the flight to medical check-ups, the Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.
The child's eight-member family arrived in Sri Lanka to attend a wedding in Wattala. Friends and relatives who participated at the wedding ceremony with the family will also be tested for possible infection, the Minister said.
The health officials in Sri Lanka said that there are several detectors at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake to detect the infected travelers reaching the country.
Swine Flu technically known as Influenza A (H1N1) was first reported in Mexico. The virus quickly spread to USA and several European countries has now migrated to the Asian countries including Sri Lanka and India.
According to World Health Organization 76 countries have officially reported 35,928 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection, including 163 deaths.

According to the latest news reports upto 20th of June 2009, there are four reported patients with H1N1 flu detected in Sri Lanka, all arrived from Australia to attend a family function.

COLOMBO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Another two A/H1N1 flu cases have been detected in Sri Lanka, adding the total affected to four, the Sri Lankan government said Saturday.
The Department of Government Information said in a statement that the two new victims are also close relatives of the first A/H1N1 flu patient, an eight-year-old boy. All patients arrived in Sri Lanka from Australia last Sunday.
However, officials from the Health Ministry said there is no reason to be panic as the situation is well under control.
Anura Senanayake, the director of the Infectious Disease Hospital in Angoda where the four patients are being treated, said that the first A/H1N1 flu patient is now recovering.
The Sri Lankan government said it has already initiated a surveillance program at the main entry point to the country, the Bandaranaike International Airport to detect possible cases of the disease coming to the country.
All arriving passengers are screened by thermal scanners installed before the immigration desk and those detected with high fever are directed to the health desk by public health inspectors attached to this point.
The government also said 20 hospitals had been identified as sentinel hospitals for pandemic influenza preparedness.
Clinical case management capacity in these hospitals had been strengthened by establishing/upgrading isolation units, supply of antiviral drug stocks, among others.

"The victim, who is from Battaramulla had come to the country yesterday and we have immediately given medical treatment to her," she said.
Meanwhile the first two of the four children affected by the swine flu who were being treated at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Angoda were discharged yesterday, hospital authorities said. The other two will be discharged today.
All the four patients had arrived in Sri Lanka from Australia in a Singapore Airlines flight on June 14.

June 24, Colombo: Two Philippine nationals who are in Sri Lanka for a tour have been tested positive for Swine Flu and admitted to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Angoda.
Dr. Anura Senanayake, Director of the Hospital confirmed that the two Philippine women were admitted to the hospital last night by the officials of Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake.
According to the sources at the airport several air lines have rejected to carry the two women to Philippines due to the infection.
The total number of swine flu patients detected in Sri Lanka has risen to seven including these two foreigners.
Currently three patients are receiving treatment at the IDH and four who received treatment at the hospital have been discharged.

June 28, Colombo: Sri Lankan Health officials today detected another female with swine flu, Medical Research Institute confirmed.
The newly-detected patient, a 22 year old female who has also reached the country from Australia several days ago has been admitted to the Infectious Disease Hospital in Angoda.
With this patient the total number of swine flu patients who are still receiving treatments at the hospital has risen to 09, Dr, Anura Senanayake, Director of the IDH said.
The total number of swine flu patients detected in Sri Lanka was 15 and most of them have reached the country from Australia.

COLOMBO, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan health authorities said on Friday that two more A/H1N1 flu cases were confirmed on Thursday, bringing the total number of A/H1N1 flu cases in the country to 55.
The Epidemiological Unit of the Ministry of Health said in its latest report that the new patients have arrived from Singapore and Malaysia.
The first confirmed case of A/H1N1 flu in the island was reported on June 16. The first patient is an eight-year-old boy who is an Australian citizen. Three more relatives of his family had also been confirmed as positive cases for the infection.

Aug 01, Colombo: A patient believed to be suffering from Influenza A / H1N1 has been admitted to Kalmunai hospital yesterday evening, Sri Lanka's Health Ministry announced.
This was the first suspected H1N1 flu case reported from Eastern Sri Lanka.
A person who reached the country from Dubai has been admitted to the Kalmunai hospital after the airport officials informed the health authorities.
The Epidemiology Unit of Sri Lanka Health Ministry reported 55 cases of H1N1 flu in Sri Lanka as of July 28th.

Aug 01, Colombo: A patient believed to be suffering from Influenza A / H1N1 has been admitted to Kalmunai hospital yesterday evening, Sri Lanka's Health Ministry announced.
This was the first suspected H1N1 flu case reported from Eastern Sri Lanka.
A person who reached the country from Dubai has been admitted to the Kalmunai hospital after the airport officials informed the health authorities.
According to the latest reports 70 cases of H1N1 have been reported from Sri Lanka so far, no deaths reported due to swine flue , where as dengue fever remains a major issue 22849 patients reported so far this year alone while 232 people have died due to dengue fever in the year 2009.
