    Feeding tubes questioned / Society backs halting of insertion through patients' stomachs

    The Japan Geriatrics Society has come up with the view that medical facilities should consider as an option the suspension or infrequent use of a medical procedure in which a surgical incision is made in the stomach of aged terminally ill patients and a feeding tube inserted.

    Tubes used less in U.S., Europe

    Negative views have become prevalent in the United States and Europe over the use of feeding tubes inserted through an abdominal incision in terminal dementia patients, based on advanced research on the procedure, according to Kaoruko Aita, a special-appointment researcher at the University of Tokyo.

      Opposition party executive comes under fire over 'Alien' remarks

      TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Nobuteru Ishihara, secretary general of Japan's main opposition Liberal Democratic Party, came under fire Tuesday for saying the previous day he was reminded of the movie "Alien" when he saw dozens of unconscious bedridden people supported by gastric feeding tubes.
