    Japan to ask UNESCO to list Mt. Fuji, Kamakura as World Heritage sites

    TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs said Monday it will finalize its decision Wednesday to recommend Mt. Fuji and the ancient city of Kamakura as World Heritage cultural sites in 2013.

    Japan seeks UNESCO listing for Mt. Fuji, Kamakura

    The Japanese government has decided to officially recommend that Mount Fuji and the city of Kamakura be designated UNESCO world cultural heritage sites, aiming for their registration in 2013.

        Former rival prefectures observe Mount Fuji Day

        Students in Shizuoka Prefecture were given the day off on Feb. 23 to take part in the drive to have their beloved Mount Fuji listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
