Parents remove volcanic ash from school ground

The parents of students at an elementary school in southwestern Japan have removed volcanic ash from the school ground.

About 80 people took part in the cleaning at Otobo Elementary School on Sunday......

Meteological Agency to observe Mt Shinmoe

The Meteorological Agency warns that Mount Shinmoe, in southwestern Japan, is likely to continue strong eruptions. The volcano spewed smoke from its crater on Sunday, after erupting violently on Friday.

Mount Shinmoe is in the Kirishima mountain range, which straddles Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures....

Miyakonojo school ground reopens after ash removal

Children at an elementary school in southwestern Japan were all smiles on Monday as they were able to use their school ground for the first time in nearly a month.

Otobo Elementary School in Miyakonojo City is only 22 kilometers from Mount Shinmoe, which started erupting last month....

Mt. Shinmoe volcanic eruptions hit 1-month mark

Saturday will mark a full month of active eruptions at the volcano Mount Shinmoe in southwestern Japan.

The head of Japan's Coordinating Committee for the Prediction of Volcanic Eruptions, Toshitsugu Fujii, spent Friday observing Shinmoe's crater from a helicopter.....

Mount Shinmoe erupts again

Mount Shinmoe, in southwestern Japan, erupted explosively on Tuesday evening for the first time in 11 days.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says it could not confirm the height of smoke from the volcano due to clouds in the sky....

Japan Volcano Erupts, Sends Columns of Ash in Air

March 13, 2011

A volcano in southwestern Japan erupted Sunday after nearly two weeks of relative silence, sending ash and rocks up to four kilometers into the air, a local official said.

It was not immediately clear if the eruption was a direct result of the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake that rocked northern areas Friday, unleashing a fierce tsunami and sparking fears that more than 10,000 may have been killed.

The 1,421-meter Shinmoedake volcano in the Kirishima range saw its first major eruption for 52 years in January. There had not been any major activity at the site since March 1.
