Avian flu derails regional Halal project
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (14 August) -- The Avian Influenza that affected Indonesia and Malaysia has derailed the plan of the four countries under the BIMP EAGA to pursue the Halal chicken project.
BIMP EAGA Business Council (BEBC) chair Antonio Santos guesting at the Kapehan sa Dabaw on Monday said the project is facing a problem especially that two countries are now being stricken by the Bird Flu virus.
He said the four countries as planned had specific assignments with regards the implementation of the project.
Other than that, he said Brunei Darussalam which handles the processing of Halal certification are working in snail-pace as they kept on changing the director that heads the work.
Businessman Vicente Lao now chair of the Mindanao Business Council who was the point person of the project said Santos with the recent development has opted to import chicken from the Asian countries instead.
Although Santos said that putting the poultry right here in Mindanao could be a better option but this has to be carefully studied with the two other countries already having the Avian Flu.
Not only that the farmers are also affected with the cost of feeds because even if Indonesia's corn is cheap, the protocol regarding protection against Bird Flu the international guideline prohibits access like corn in countries that has the virus.
On the other hand, industry players during the 6th Mindanao Food Congress will present resolutions to the government for appropriate responses.
One of the resolutions is the lowering of importation costs of feed inputs to increase productivity and profitability of the Mindanao livestock and poultry sectors.
The resolution stated that the growing expansion of livestock and poultry industries means a greater need to supply the requirements for feeds, particularly corn products for poultry and soybean meal for hogs.
It said there is still a projected shortfall of about 1.8 million metric tons in corn despite the volume of corn production with last year record of 6.14 million metric tons and the recent importation of 400,000 metric tons of corn this year.
With the unavailability of low-cost imported feed requirements, it would result to additional cost amounting to P1.1 billion in additional costs in livestock and poultry that would translate to a one percent drop in production.
A study by the University of Asia and the Pacific indicated that the one percent drop in the production of livestock and poultry industry would mean P1.3 billion in losses. As this developed the industry players asked the government to consider strongly raising the country's corn yields to significant levels as well as raise a sustainable budget for research and development innovations in corn by shifting its focus on strengthening the corn industry in Mindanao, the area being the biggest corn producer in the country, the resolution stated.
