Re: THAILAND - [Lampang] 18 suspected human cases of bf in Lampang hospital

Lampang circled in blue on map. I also thought I'd post this short news article from southeastern Myanmar from just a few days ago. Considering the breakout of H5N1 in Thailand and how close Rangoon is to Thailand, it is now more interesting than I had thought at first. Eye infections? Several types of bird flu are well known to produce conjunctivitis. Respiratory illnesses? Severe Dengue? Those are big catchwords. What's so extreme about their weather anyway?

Dengue fever outbreak in Rangoon Division

Jul 18, 2006 (DVB) - Due to a severe outbreak of dengue fever this raining season, hospitals within Rangoon Division are filled with ill children and there were some fatalities.

The outbreak is said to be caused by a type of striped mosquitoes which bite their victims during the day and the situations are said to be worse at crowded and rundown wards inhabited by poor day labourers. The situations are particularly very bad at suburban areas in Thaketa, North Okkalapa and Dagon New Town Townships, according to local residents.

?Yes, there have been many cases recently,? a doctor on duty in North Okkalapa General Hospital told DVB when asked about the situation there. ?There were some patients who died from dengue fever?not that many though. Only 2-3 people who were hospitalised died in total.?

He said that most of the patients who died came to the hospital when it was too late for them and that patients are graded according to the levels of severity, for treatments.

Moreover, children have been suffering from respiratory illnesses and eye infections due to the extreme weather conditions and changes, according to doctors from Insein and Dagon New Town.

Update from the Nakhon Sawan DPC - July 26, 2006

July 26: 40 suspected human bf cases "on investigation." Fifteen (15) new suspected cases reported on the 26th from Phichit province -- two (2) new suspected cases reported from Kamphaeng Phet (one of these was "excluded" today).

2 cases seem to have been excluded from Phichit from the 24th to the 25th -- and, of course, one case was confirmed.

The breakdown - "on investigation" as of July 26:
      Nakhon Sawan = 0
      Uthani Thani = 0
      Kamphaeng Phet = 1
      Phichit = 39

once again.....Lampang is located further up the rail line. North of Uttaradit. Next stop...Chiang Mai.

then I promise i won't be harpin anymore on the railroad/h-h transmission theory I have. As Chiang Mai is the end of the rail line.

        great map btw. thanks.

Harp away. The theory seems plausable. Keep up the good work.

Chiang Rai is also upstream of Phichit and Lampang. As are Laos, Myanmar and ... China. This story has repeated itself before, (but on a far smaller scale). Read the following news article from October of last year.

Two more suspected bird flu victims
            Posted on Saturday, 29 October 2005, 16: 12 GMT

Two more suspected avian influenza patients have been found in two northern Thai provinces of Chiang Rai and Phichit, doctors said on Saturday. An 18-year-old man has been admitted at a hospital in Chiang Saen District of Chiang Rai Province since October 26 after he came into contact with dead chickens for unknown reasons. Trained volunteers are now closely monitoring the deadly disease in villages in this province, as winter is approaching, when the danger increases. Bird flu prefers cold weather, according to experts.
The second suspected victim is a 49-year-old man and is now receiving a treatment at a hospital in Phichit Province. Doctors have sent his blood for test to the Department of Medical Sciences and the result is expected to be known on Monday. According to doctors, the victim raised a flock of more than 100 chickens and ducks at his home and felt sick after eating his dead birds. The doctors said two women who were also suspected of having contracted the disease and were admitted at the hospital earlier are still in critical condition now. Two boys who were admitted to hospital in Phichit on Wednesday have been released after doctors said the patients suffered from ordinary influenza and not bird flu. (Source: Thai News Agency)

Actually your current posts on Vientiane, Laos? It's located at the thai border on the end of another rail line going northeast through thailand. lol

Now in seriousness. Are we talking of the same city? Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai? My Oxford atlas of the world has it as chiang Mai. Never seen so many confusing town names in all my life.

and btw. We left the river long before we got to Lampang.

I'm using Google Earth. If you look at the satellite pictures you can clearly see the riverplain through the area. I agree, the names are strange. Remember too, that railroads are usually built at the lowest, flattest elevation, and thus are built along riverplains.

                  Thailand 7/27

Eleven more suspected bird flu cases in Phichit
PHICHIT, July 27 (TNA) - Eleven more suspected bird flu cases were reported in Thailand's lower northern province of Phichit on Thursday.

Dr. Prajak Wattanakul, head of the Phichit provincial public health office, said that the 11 patients, mostly children aged between 4-14, are suspected of being infected with avian influenza virus and were admitted to five different hospitals in the province on Thursday.

Some of them had contacted with dead poultry and others live in areas where a large number of fowls died of unknown causes.

All the 11 patients were quarantined and samples of their blood and phlegm were sent for laboratory tests in the medical science centre in Nakhon Sawan, expected to be able to release the test results Friday, the doctor said. (TNA)-E009

                        Known cases=1.

Suspected cases=changing numbers by the hour.

Reported suspected cases (roughly), a lot of overlap likely, with many possibly excluded and 2/3 of the country not reporting anything yet = 129.

Today's table at 15.00 lists 16 under investigation. 33 of yesterdays 40 have tested negative. I do not see where the 11 fit in, maybe these were reported after 15.00 ?

BTW there are now multiple Thailand threads - can they be merged ?
