16,825 chickens at Xuejia Chicken Farm in Tainan City were culled after confirmed cases of avian influenza

      2024-04-16 10:54:29

Huaxia Jingwei.com, April 16: According to Taiwan's "China Times News Network", the Animal Protection Department of the Tainan City Government received reports on the 12th that there were abnormal deaths of laying hens in the local chicken farm in Xuejia District, and it was diagnosed as H5N1 subtype. After the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, the Animal Protection Department completed the culling of 16,825 eggs on the 15th and destroyed the eggs on the premises. All were transported to the incinerator for destruction and the entire site was disinfected. This is the sixth case of avian influenza in Tainan so far this year. Case.
The Animal Welfare Department stated that it has conducted sampling and monitoring of 6 poultry farms within a radius of 1 kilometer around the culling site, and visited and inspected 42 poultry farms within 1 to 3 kilometers. At the same time, it has strengthened the management and control of abnormal numbers of dead animals in the culling farms and continued to dispatch dispatches. Disinfection trucks increase the frequency of disinfection of public areas around the culling site to minimize viruses in the environment.
The Animal Welfare Department stated that now is the season for migratory and wild birds to return north, and local cases of avian influenza have occurred sporadically in Taiwan. So far this year, a total of 30 cases of avian influenza have occurred in Taiwan, indicating that there is still a threat of avian influenza viruses in the environment, coupled with the large temperature difference between day and night. , can easily cause poultry stress, and we call on poultry farmers to be more vigilant and strengthen epidemic prevention work to reduce the chance of virus invasion.

This outbreak indicates the recurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 subtype (clade 2.3.4.4b) in two poultry farms in Chinese Taipei. The owner of these two farms reported the situation to the local veterinary authority in Yunlin County, and samples were collected on June 29. The samples were sent to the National Reference Laboratory for diagnosis on July 1. Clinical signs included increased mortality rates, reduced appetite, and decreased egg production. The outbreak was confirmed as HPAI on July 4. Subsequently, 43,602 chickens were culled, and comprehensive cleaning and disinfection were conducted on July 6. Farms within a 3-kilometer radius of this location will undergo heightened surveillance for the next 28 days.
