La Union vets issues tight warning on bird-flu
By Jessie R. Valdez
San Fernando City, La Union (11 January) -- The La Union Veterinary Office headed by Dr. Nida N. Gapuz said that the office is not relaxing its guard on bird flu. Whether there's an outbreak or none, we're always on the alert to maintain the province's status of a zero case bird-flu.
Earlier, all domestic birds and poultry products originating from Korea were ordered banned in the countryby Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Arthur Yap, following a report dated November 26, 2007 submitted by Dr. Chang- Seob Kim, the director of Korea's Animal Health Division, to the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) or Animal Health Organization, on the outbreak of low pathogenic AI of serotype H7N3 n a duck-raising farm in Yongdoo-dong, Kwangju-Jikhalsi.
Yap said in a statement that he has re-imposed a ban on this and immediately ordered all DA quarantine officers and inspectors at all major airports and seaports to stop and confiscate all shipments of live birds, poultry and poultry products into the country that comes from Korea.
The DA official added that the ban also include day-old chicks, eggs and semen. "This temporary ban and other emergency measures were necessary to protect human health and the 60 billion poultry industry in the Philippines which has remained free of bird flu ever since the H5N1 strain of this virus resurfaced in 2003," Yap said.
Since there's a warning or a directive, Gapuz said, the office exerts more effort and strict in implementing our preparedness programs and response plans of protection and prevention together with our 19 municipalities and 1 City Bird Flu Task Forces.
"As a routine measure, strict border control thru regular round-the-clock 24 hour check point operations has been placed, deployed teams to conduct shop disease surveillance, inventory of birds and species as well as number of birds per barangay and municipality, daily routine inspection, field monitoring and educating/alerting/warning those living in identified high risk areas are all going on to prepare them for the threat," Gapuz said.
Furthermore, there's close coordination and meetings with DA, DENR, DOH, LGUs top officials and other counterparts in order to strengthen our programs against bird-flu, Gapuz added.
The Philippines is one of the only 3 Avian Influenza-free countries in Southeast Asia. The two ohers are Brunei and Singapore. (PIA La Union)
