'St. Luke's patient didn't die of SARS'

The Department of Health denied Wednesday that a Dutch patient at St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City died of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) on December 1.

Dr. Eric Tayag of the DOH's National Epidimiology Center said that according to the Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa City, tests conducted on the patient yielded negative results for SARS or avian influenza.

Reports reaching ABS-CBN News Wednesday said that Jonas Pehrson, a Dutch national, died at the Quezon City hospital on December 1 because of SARS. The 20-year-old patient, the reports added, came from China.

Mercy Gappi, Pehrson's attending physician, belied the reports and said that the patient's illness had nothing to do with the killer disease or even the dreaded "bird flu."

She added that the patient's disease was not caused by ordinary colds or bacteria but rather, complications that arose from lung trauma.
