Health agency scrambles to look for anti-dengue vaccine

THE Department of Health (DOH) is now looking into developing a vaccine to counter and fight dengue hemorrhagic fever, which already claimed the lives of more that 200 Filipinos, mostly children, since January this year.
"Probably by 2010 we will be able to develop a vaccine (for dengue)," said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III during a press briefing held Wednesday.
Duque however said developing a vaccine for dengue would be tedious because it is not only one dengue strain that they need to research but four strains.
He said all four strains are found to be present in all of the dengue cases nationwide but it was strain 3 that is the dominant one.
