    BODY FORMED TO CHECK SPREAD OF BIRD FLU

    Islamabad - The government on Monday announced setting up of a joint Steering Committee to monitor and check the prevention and control of avian and pandemic influenza in the country.

    The committee constituted on the directives of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz will be jointly chaired by Health Minister Mohammad Nasir Khan and Minister for Food, Agriculture and Livestock Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan.

    The committee will meet on a quarterly basis and will regularly monitor global, regional and national situation regarding H5N1/avian influenza outbreaks in the poultry and humans. It will also spearhead the formulation of national policy and strategic planning on avian and pandemic influenza and advise on coordination, response, awareness, advocacy, resource mobilization, and implementation of plans. The other responsibilities of the committee include monitoring, reviewing the preparedness and response plans and actions and ensure immediate response, by the quarters concerned, by identifying the requirements and ensuring timely availability of anti-viral medicines, vaccines and other essential items.

    The committee will also comprise secretaries of the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, DG Ministry of Health, Executive Director National Institute of Health, Surgeon General Pakistan Army, additional secretaries of ministries of Finance, Information, Interior, Foreign Affairs and Environment, provincial secretaries for Health and Livestock, Chief Public Health Laboratories, NIH Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Minfal, President Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) and President Pharma Bureau Pakistan.

    NO RISK OF BIRD FLU IN PAKISTAN: SHERPAO

    Islamabad -- Federal interior minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao has said that there is no risk of bird flu in Pakistan and government is taking every possible step to save poultry industry for the welfare of people.

    Interior minister expressed these views while addressing in the ceremony of distribution of cheques to the affected owners of poultry farms here on Friday.

    He said that government is responsible for the life and property of people and expressed its unity with the nation which was exhibited by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz who ate chicken with the whole cabinet when the country was at the risk of bird flu.

    He praised the owners of poultry flocks who cooperated with government in killing the affected hens without any regard of their own loss.

    He underscored that government has fulfilled its promise to compensate their loss by distributing cheques among them.

    Earlier, chief commissioner Islamabad Khalid Pervaiz told the interior minister that virus H-5 and N-1 were found in 28 different flocks of Tarlai and SIhala region for which 112,726 hens were killed.

    Interior minister distributed cheques among the owners of poultry flocks and they thanked the interior minister and government for compensation of their loss.
