Japan raises bird flu alert to highest level after virus found in Hokkaido

            October 15, 2024

Japan's Environment Ministry has raised the nation's bird flu alert to the highest level after a highly pathogenic strain of the avian flu virus was detected in two towns in Hokkaido Prefecture, northern Japan.

The ministry says the bird flu virus was detected in a dead wild falcon found in the town of Otobe on September 30 and also in the droppings of wild ducks in the town of Betsukai on October 8.

The ministry set the alert to the highest level of three on Tuesday. Officials are calling on local governments across the country to strengthen the monitoring of wild birds and to step up their efforts to confirm whether those birds are carrying the virus or not.

Avian influenza virus found in water of wild bird roost, first confirmed in Kyushu this season... Cranes and ducks may be using it in Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture
              2024/11/09 10:46

On the 8th, Kagoshima Prefecture announced that highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H5N1 subtype) was detected in water of a wild bird roost in Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The roost is believed to be used by cranes and ducks, and Kagoshima University tested and confirmed the water collected on the 4th. According to the Ministry of the Environment, this is the 20th confirmed case of infection related to wild birds in Japan this season and the first in Kyushu.

              Kagoshima Prefectural Office

The ministry has designated the area within a 10-kilometer radius of the collection site as a "wild bird monitoring priority area" to strengthen monitoring of wild birds.
