Japan halts imports of French baby chicks after bird flu breakout

Wednesday 04th February, 03:42 AM JST
    TOKYO ?
The farm ministry said Tuesday it has ordered a temporary halt to imports of French-raised baby chicks, other fowls and chicken meat in light of the outbreak of an attenuated type of a bird flu there.
Japan suspended the imports to prevent the flu from intruding into Japan after the French government informed the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of the outbreak of the H5 strain of avian influenza, it said.

L'élevage était atteint d'un virus H5 apparemment faiblement pathogène.
Livestock was suffering from a virus apparently low pathogenic H5.

It is under new precautionary measures that apply to forms of low pathogenic avian influenza viruses that ducks have been slaughtered, said the prefecture of Vendée in a statement.

Against the following interview with Didier BOISSELEAU, director of veterinary services Vendée

"Il s'agit d'un virus H5 mais pas N1 (le H5N1 étant la forme la plus pathogène du virus de la grippe aviaire, ndlr)", a expliqué le directeur adjoint des services vétérinaires du département, Frédéric André.
"This is an H5 virus but not N1 (H5N1 being the most pathogenic avian influenza viruses, ie)," said the deputy director of the veterinary services department, Frédéric André.

"Par mesure de précaution, il est appliqué dans un rayon de 1 km autour de l'élevage concerné par le recensement des élevages de volailles, qui feront l'objet d'une surveillance renforcée, une restriction des mouvements de volailles dans cette même zone", indique la préfecture.
"As a precautionary measure, it is applied within a radius of 1 km of livestock covered by the census of poultry farms, which will be subject to increased surveillance, restriction of movement of poultry in the same area ", said the prefecture.

Cases of low pathogenic viruses have already been observed in the department but "this is the first time that a farm slaughtered under a 2008 regulation that required in case of low pathogenic virus," said M .
"This prevents the virus walks in nature," he added.

Avian flu: new duck demolition per precaution in the Vend?e

NANTES - a duck breeding reached of a virus of avian flu H5N3 ?slightly pathogenic?, close to a breeding shot down on February 1 for the same reasons, was cut down Monday in the Vend?e by measure of precaution, indicated the prefecture in an official statement.

This breeding was located at 1,5 km of the first breeding of 5.000 ducks shot down at the beginning of the month, under the terms of new measures of precaution applying to the forms slightly pathogenic of the virus of the avian flu.

The discovery of the hearth of avian flu in the Vend?e on February 1 had involved the suspension by Japan of the imports of fresh foie gras and poultries coming from France.

The demolition of the breedings contaminated by these not very pathogenic viruses of this type is obligatory since a new regulation going back to 2008.

According to the prefecture of the Vend?e, the virus detected on the shot down animals Monday is the same one as that detected in the breeding shot down on February 1. ?An epidemiological investigation is in hand to specify the origin of the contamination of the breedings concerned?, it added.

France exported in 2008 (over 11 months) less than 1.000 tons of poultry meats towards Japan, on the 438.000 tons exported towards the third worldwide for the same period, according to the provided figures by the French Confederation of poultry farming (CFA).

On the other hand, Japan is an important partner for the foie gras. In 2008, it imported of them 372 tons of foie gras believed, on the 2.283 tons exported by France towards the third worldwide during the same period.
