Man dies from tick-bite

A 64-year-old man in South Chungcheong Province died from a tick-borne virus after being hospitalized for a week, putting Korea?s health authorities on high alert over the deadly disease.

This is the first confirmed death this year from the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), which took the lives of 17 people last year.

According to the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) Monday, the man was hospitalized on May 3 after exhibiting symptoms of SFTS, which include vomiting and high fever. He died a week later.

Health authorities warn about dangers of tick-borne viruses

Korea is on high alert over a fatal tick-borne virus following the nation's first death this year in May.
A man in his 60s died from the deadly virus after showing symptoms of thrombocytopenia syndrome, which includes vomiting and high fever.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention examined the 35 Koreans who have been confirmed with the virus over the past year.
According to the report, the number of patients was highest in the month of June, accounting for about one-fourth of the total, followed by the months of May, July and September.
Out of the 35 confirmed SFTS cases, 16 people have died so far, putting the fatality rate at 46 percent.

Four Koreans dead after contracting tick-borne virus

A total of four Koreans have died since last month after contracting a deadly virus often transmitted by ticks, according to health authorities. All of the deceased patients were aged 70 or older.

The first patient who died of the disease this year contracted the virus while working at a farm on Jejudo Island, the Health Ministry said. The 74-year-old died on June 14. Since then, three more patients have died in Gyeonggi and South Gyeongsang provinces.
